See this news story. Let the comp begin!

You can upload your mp3's to the new 2009 MP3 compilation category in the downloads part of the site.

Also, to help me out, please please please:

  • Ensure your MP3 is at least 128 kbps, otherwise archive.org won't put it in its cool player (at least, that was the case 2 years ago).

  • Fill out the mp3 tags! Very few people did this. Crying

  • Only send in mp3 files. No other formats please.

I've got one to contribute. It's a demo I did in GarageBand for a new Volcanos song, Baja Bound.

I'm new to this. Will there be art to go with this? I know it's a download thing.

Maybe I am crazy - what protection of ownership do we have over songs that we add to this compilation? Not that any one would want to steal my crappy riffs, just wondering.

If you want to protect and make money from your songs, you must join ascap or BMI, and register your songs. Once you are registered as the author of a song your're pretty much covered. If you are really paranoid, you can register your stuff with the Library of Congress, but there is a fee for each song. Ascap and BMI make sure you get paid when your tracks are used commercialy.
We've had a bunch of our tracks used commercialy (Jackass, The Real World, ABC World News, etc.) and it's paid off quite nicely. Every so often I'll get a check in the mail. Sometimes it's quite substantial, sometimes it's 13 cents. You can make money playing surf.

It has always been something in the back of my mind, keeping me from getting my music out there. Maybe you would classify that as paranoia. I would be flattered if some one ripped me off, haha. Anyway, thanks for the info. What type of fees do they charge to register with them?

Well....did you read the news story (link in first post and see front page)? The songs will be put on archive.org using one of their creative commons licenses.

Also, just like anything else you create, you will be the copyright holder.

IANAL, etc.

totally free to join ascap. You have to have played your music in an ascap licensed establishment ( that would be most bars and clubs) or have your music available commercially in some way, shape or form. You can register online. The Library of Congress charges $15 a song to copyright so it can add up, and they don't help you get paid.

Hmm.. good to know. You can have your songs available for download online and that would be considered commercially available I presume. Gracias.

BMI is also free.

And it appears that posting your music to an online, downloadable site/compilation is similar to having one of your songs included on a hardcopy CD compilation. Sure, somebody will have to buy the CD. But then they may just copy it for their buddy. Some bands also give away comp CDs. We use them to entice people to buy our full CDs. Buy one get one free. Your music is out there. And hopefully, if they like your track, they'll seek out and actually pay for your full album.

There is always the fear that, upon hearing your song, someone may choose to rip off your riffage or bootleg your music. The only way you can truly protect yourself is by keeping it all to yourself and never performing your music in public or posting your songs to the internet. Of course, what's the point in making music at all if you're not going to present it to the world?

That brings me to another question. Is any type of credit/contact information included with these downloads, say, in a readme file? It would be great to include links to a band's web site. Or, perhaps bands can include PDF copies of their EPKs or one-sheets to accompany the comp. Then fans can read all about the bands whose songs they've just downloaded.

Whatever you supply in the description that you provide along with the mp3 when you upload it here is put into a .pdf file that is included on archive.org. Take a look at the previous compilations.

Thanks for letting us have a tune on another SG101 comp. It's shaping up to be a really good one this year. We chose to put a cover on this one because we're saving all our originals for our first CD!! "Pressure" was recorded 'live' at a Relay For Life benefit so of course we had no say whatsoever in how it was recorded etc. but we think it came out OK. I did learn something about the reverb tank that night...the MC was a large person that had to walk by my setup when leaving the stage and....BOOM!! The tank goes off all crackling and snapping and everyone's looking at me!! haha!! AND i had it sitting on a one inch thick piece of foam. I can't wait to hear more entry's....keep 'em coming!
