Permalink review of southern culture on the skids 11/20/08

some surf content.............

last night was the fourth time i'm seen southern culture on the skids......scots for short..........and i must say they were the best i've ever seen them. they opened the show with a surfy instrumental 'skullbucket' and later in the show played another one called 'wetspot' after which the guitar player, rick miller, commented 'wow, lots of reverb'. during another number they broke into 'miserlou' midway and finished off their two hour set with a pounding version of link wray's 'jack the ripper'.

the opening band from NYC called 'demolition string band' were a tight country-ish band with great vocals. on one tune their lady singer/rhythm guitar player switched to a baritone guitar and played a cool original spaghetti western style instrumental. very, very good. it left me wishing they had done more material like it.

rick said they, the scots, are going on tour later next spring with los straitjackets. this should be a great show. when i find out the dates i'll post them.

Mom,
Seen 'em a number of time myself over the years. Were they mainly supporting 'Countrypolitan'?
The last couple of times I saw them they wrapped up with Rick doing his extended version of Meximelt.

I just noticed this...me & BTD caught them last Labor Day at a car show in Ventura. Your review of their set sounds similar to what I saw. Best I'd ever seen 'em & Rick was TEARING it up.
