The Lively Ones

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 28 Jun 2005 15:59:00

"Goofy Foot" ("Surf Battle" - born from "Apache") appears to be their
only original, written by Jim Masoner.
"High Tide" ("Tranquilizer") was originally titled "El Toro" and was a
Surfmen instro (Summers wrote it I think. If not, it would have been
Ray Hunt). Some members of the Surfmen went on to the Lively Ones.
Likewise, "Paradise Cove" and "Surfers Lamen" ("Cryin' Guitar") came
from the Surfmen / Summers. "Paradise Cove" grew out of the Expressos
(pre-Surfmen) "Wandering."
"Forty Miles of Bad Surf" is Duane Eddy's "Forty Miles Of Bad Road."
"Shootin' The Pier" is a Freddy King song - "San-Ho-Zay" maybe - I
can't recall. Likewise "Chicken Scratch" is Freddy King's "Heads Up."
"Hey Scrounge," "Crazy Surf" and "Guitarget" ("Hotdoggen") are Bob
Summers.
"Livin'" is Johnny and the Hurricanes "Hungry Eye."
"Happy Gremmie" is a Nat Kendrick and the Swans song titled "Do The
Mashed Potatoes."
"Surf Drums" is Link's "Raw-Hide."
The Expressos consisted of Ray Hunt (lead), Nick Drury (rhythm), Dale
Ward (bass) and Jerry LaFavor (drums). The Surfmen were Ray Hunt
(lead), Nick Drury (rhythm), Armon Frank (sax), Randall Anglin (bass),
and Tim Fitzpatrick (drums). After replacing Drury, Anglin, and Frank
with Ed Chiaverini, Ron Griffith, and Joel Willenbring, they changed
their name to the Lively Ones in 1962.

Phil, who wrote these songs:
High Tide (Tranquilizer), Goofy Foot (Surf Battle), Crying Guitar
(Surfer's Lament), Guitarget (Hotdoggen), Forty Miles of Bad Surf,
Shootin' The Pier, Happy Gremmie, Crazy Surf.
These are the songs I think of as their originals, even if it was
Summers that wrote them (though some of these may be covers, I'm not
sure). "The Savage" was written by the Shadows producer Norrie
Paramour, but most people still think of it as a Shadows original.

I think there's something in the liner notes of a couple of Ventures albums
about that. (Live in Japan '65 and WDR-The Best of, maybe?)
Something about a lawsuit over the band or their management/label claiming
publishing for the song? It sounds familiar.

Warren,
Man, I love the Fabulous Wailers, and each of their remakes
of "Dirty Robber." A song in which I believe got better in one of
their final remakes, the one in which the drummer is almost turning
the beat around in the verses. They sure were a great band.
Does their version of "San Ho Zay" have the main riff follow the
chord changes? Or am I thinking of the Saturn V... I know
some "frat band" did it this way. I'll have to check when I get
home from work... I still think Freddy's is the best tho.

Discography:
The Expressos
(TRANS-AMERICAN) Teenage Express / Wondering (12/60)
The Surfmen

(TITAN 1727) Malibu Run / El Toro (9/62)

Ok, yes, Spudnik (the original title) on the Ventures "Mashed Potatoes" album is
credited to Nokie. I heard somewhere that when the Lively Ones covered it and
changed the title to "Surf Rider", they did not credit Nokie. It may be that
they didn't print writing credits for any songs on those old albums and with the
changing of the title, it appeared that the Lively Ones were taking the tune as
their own.

Ward (bass) and Jerry LaFavor (drums). The Surfmen were Ray Hunt
(lead), Nick Drury (rhythm), Armon Frank (sax), Randall Anglin
(bass),
and Tim Fitzpatrick (drums). After replacing Drury, Anglin, and
Frank
with Ed Chiaverini, Ron Griffith, and Joel Willenbring, they
changed
their name to the Lively Ones in 1962.

Phil, who wrote these songs:
High Tide (Tranquilizer), Goofy Foot (Surf Battle), Crying Guitar
(Surfer's Lament), Guitarget (Hotdoggen), Forty Miles of Bad Surf,
Shootin' The Pier, Happy Gremmie, Crazy Surf.
These are the songs I think of as their originals, even if it was
Summers that wrote them (though some of these may be covers, I'm
not
sure). "The Savage" was written by the Shadows producer Norrie
Paramour, but most people still think of it as a Shadows original.

Whoa! We recorded El Toro and Tranquilizer (High Tide) ( a few years
apart) and never noticed they were different incarnations of the same
song (at least I didn't). That's what a change in tempo and feel can
do i guess..and I'm dumb.

PS I know this is surfguitar101, but what I've felt and seems to be
coming through in some of these posts is that the LO's were a
"drummer's band". Guitar sounds etc. has its ups and downs, sax
sometimes not so hot, but the drums on 90% of their stuff is mighty
fine. Surf Drums Forever!

There may not have been credits, certainly weren't on many LP's. That's
different from taking credit, of course.

Ok, yes, Spudnik (the original title) on the Ventures "Mashed Potatoes"
album is credited to Nokie. I heard somewhere that when the Lively Ones
covered it and changed the title to "Surf Rider", they did not credit
Nokie. It may be that they didn't print writing credits for any songs
on those old albums and with the changing of the title, it appeared
that the Lively Ones were taking the tune as their own.

I could never really figure out the whole great deal on these guys.
I thought they were ok, but sounded likealot of cover to me,
and this proves it.
And for the modern version of the Lively Ones
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ says it all.
I used thiers and the Tornadoes sets to go walking around and talk

So, Klas, what is your top 5 (or 10)? Let's hear it! I'm curious,
since you obviously have a great love of the sixties stuff.
> Sure they have some great songs but I just find the majority of

I totally agree that the sax-lead songs are a disaster. But I'm
quite surprised you think they're overrated and not exciting.
Tranquilizer, Goofy Foot, Surf Rider, Exodus, Guitarget, this is
great stuff!
> I also think many of their cover versions are better done by

Well, I think Surf Rider is much better than Spudnik. I really like
their versions of both Mr. Moto and Pipeline - maybe not better than
the originals, but I think in other ways their equals. Exodus is
amazing. Their versions of the Surfmen songs like Paradise Cove and
Crying Guitar/Surfer's Lament are better than the Surfmen I think.
I think Ted summed up it up, basically - they're a band with a
fantastic rhythm section, and for me that's where the excitement
lies. The lead guitar is OK, but it's all about the drums, bass and
rhythm guitar in that band. Great rhythm section. I also think
you'd be hard-pressed to make a CD like "Hang Five!" of the great
majority of sixties surf bands. Not only did they not release that
much, but most of the even better surf bands released a lot that was
crap. The Pyramids and the Original Surfaris come to mind.

I totally agree. That mix is an abortion. I can't understand why
Del-Fi would rerelease it like that. In fact, I always thought that
their Dick Dale covers were just weak. They just didn't have that
power that's necessary to do Dick justice.
Though I'm not a fan of mono in general, I do agree that when given
an option between the original mono and stereo mixes of the sixties
surf bands, I'd choose the mono mixed as a general rule. They often
have a better balance of instruments and a better overall tone. It
just seems that the stereo mixes were an afterthought in many
cases.

It's the same way with the Sentinels stuff. Listen to Latina or Latin
Soul with headphones and they totally lose their coolness. I think
Bob Keane was good at finding talent, but had no idea how to record.

Ivan, here are some of the 1st wave bands/artists (who made an album
or more) that I would rank higher than the Lively Ones:
(In no particular order)
Dick Dale
Astronauts
Jim Messina and the Jesters
Surfaris
Eddie and the Showmen
Pyramids
Sentinals
New Dimensions
Trashmen

Tranquilizer, Goofy Foot, Surf Rider, Exodus, Guitarget, this is
great stuff!
-----------------------------
Ivan, I think they are overrated because many people would rank them
top 3 of the 1st wave bands. The main reason I find them not that
exciting is due to the lame/strange sound mix on many of their
recordings.

Ivan, that's how I see it too, although I'm a fan of both mono and
stereo. Some bands/recordings sounded good in stereo, others didn't.
