Some of us are meeting around 7 to eat pizza for dinner at Vinny's. Its about 100 yards south east and down the hill from the parking lot, across the street from the Purple Orchid. Easy walk to the show from there.
Its at 143 Main St, El Segundo.

Big Tiki Dude serves up weekend reverb-fest
Here in the cradle of the surf sound, we know the baby is still rocking. With our toes in the sand, the summer, the water and the expansive, resonant, electronic ring of the surf guitar seem to go on forever.
Hear it at its best – and in cool variation – this weekend when the SurfGuitar101.com Convention goes off in Los Alamitos on Saturday, followed up by Sunday surf music shows at the Huntington Beach Pier and Don the Beachcomber.
The Surfguitar101.com Convention is an all-day, all-ages, nine-band festival of surf music complete with appearances by the fathers of the South Bay sound, former Belairs frontmen Eddie Bertrand and Paul Johnson. (The Belairs’ 1961 “Mr. Moto” is considered by many to be the very first recorded surf tune.) The show line-up features contemporary bands that are putting their own signatures on the surf sound. They swing it, lace it with spaghetti western twang, spook it out, clean it up and layer it with latin, asian, and middle eastern influences.
The Conventioneers: bands from Atlanta, San Francisco, Portland and San Diego as well as local favorites — like hot LA act, The Ghastly Ones, making a rare all-ages show appearance. And to facilitate total surf music scene immersion: there will be vendors selling books, cds and other surf-music-related merch. [full band list below]
Event organizer Jeff “Big Tiki Dude” Hansen, who describes himself as “a major surf fan,” became a surf music aficionado over his 15 years working surf music shows as a volunteer at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum and by “going to see almost every surf band at bar and beach shows.” The show line-up is his hand-picked creation and he says they “really are the cream of the crop.”
Hanson came up with the idea of the Convention based on big garage and rockabilly festivals held worldwide. “Now some surf festivals are springing up in Europe,” he said, “I just thought I’d take a stab at it.” Last year’s first Convention was encouraging: 150 people showed up at a venue that usually draws 20 – 60 for surf shows and Hansen said he knew he was on to something special. The bands and the fans loved it. This year’s line-up is bigger and the crowd is expected to grow.
In fact, the Saturday show may be a sellout, prompting Gary Schwind of examiner.com to suggest that fans “head to The Starting Gate for breakfast and get your wristband.” That’s right, the venue is selling breakfast before the show — nice fit with a Saturday morning surf session. Admission is first-come-first-serve and no tickets will be sold before the day of the show.
But, even if you miss the main event you can still get your surf tunes fix on Sunday, when five bands — including The Chantays, The Verbtones and The Eliminators — will “reverb-erate” the Huntington Beach Pier from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or you chill in the early evening at Don the Beachcomber with the Duotones from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
SurfGuitar101.com Convention. 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday, August 1. All-ages. Admission: 16 and over $15; 10-16, $10, under 10 free. Venue: The Starting Gate [map], 5052 Katella Ave., Los Alamitos, CA; 562-598-8957. Food and drink available. Also: No advance tickets will be sold. www.surfguitar101.com
For the complete line-up of bands — with listen-to-it-now links to their music —
The SurfGuitar101.com Convention 2009 line up:
Opening Surf Jam backed by the Detonators and Paul Johnson 11am to 12:30pm
Detonators 12:40 to 1:20
Boardwalkers 1:30 to 2:10
Sand Devils (San Diego) 2:20 to 3:00
The Surge (Atlanta) 3:10 to 3:50
Reventlos 4:00 to 4:40
Secret Samurai (San Diego) 4:50to5:30

Plus: Djs Clint Beachwood and Tiki Tena.
Vendor highlights: John Blair will be there with his Illustrated Discography of Surf Music (ooo, I want one!), and Domenic Priore will be there supporting his book: Pop Surf Culture – Music, Design, Film, and Fashion from the Bohemian Surf Boom. _________________ Radio Free Bakersfield--60 Minutes of TWANG, CRUNCH, OOMPH.
