Friday night was a treat for Dana & I because the Atomic Mosquitos had Mark Noone from the Slickee Boys on bass & not only that, but they did "When I Go To The Beach," my fave Slickees' tune!

I put together a complete FLICKR set of my pictures from the SURF GUITAR 101 CONVENTION WEEKEND
Forgive me for re-posting this in other threads, such as DON THE BEACHCOMBERS August 6th, DON THE BEACHCOMBERS August 7th, and SUZY's August 8th -- but since each was independent, and separate threads exist, I thought I would post the link in all of them b/c the Flickr set consists of 800 pix covering all of these events
Again, killer job done by JEFF/B.T.D. and TIKI TENA, and God Bless all the musicians who played their hearts and fingers out!! And for all the local folk who contributed equipment for others to use -- that's the kind of spirit in the surf community that I love so much to see
That was one Hell of a weekend!! Still coming down from all the great moments
I hope the pix I shot capture the spirit of what I was so lucky to experience

I'm going to do this day by day....
I've been crazy busy since I got back, not to mention trying to process the whole experience, so forgive my slight lateness getting to all of this. I suppose this is the best place to begin! I once again made the trek out to California for THE BIGGEST SURF MUSIC EVENT IN THE COUNTRY, and once again did I have a legendary time. I did, however, make the mistake of flying standby the first weekend in August, so that meant sitting in an airport for HOURS. For Friday, it kind of worked out well, as Atlanta's airport, insane as it is, is a well-oiled machine. It's comfortable, efficient, and has just about any amenity that one could hope for when waiting around to get on a plane. Monday at LAX was a VERY different story, but I digress...
I got to LA around 6 or so, picked up my rental car and headed straight to Don's. What a great primer for the weekend!! Like last year, and the days that followed, I did not see one bad act. They all offered something different, and rounded out the events quite nicely:
The Wadadli Riders: I walked in at what appeared to be the beginning of their set. I really enjoyed watching this band play. They just seem to be having so much damn fun!! The love that they have for this music just emanates from them with every song.
Outerwave: I don't believe I had ever heard them play, though I certainly had heard OF them. They played a great selection of surf standards with a big sound and obvious passion. Their traditional approach to the spirit and music went beautifully with The Wadadli Riders.
The Atomic Mosquitos: After this weekend, I have now seen The Atomic Mosquitos 5 times since April, and I had never seen them before that. I only mention this because every single time I see them I'm impressed all over again. They have a GREAT sound and energy to spare! Their latest album Meltdown has been on constant rotation since I bought it a couple of months ago (sadly got to that album late!!)
The Space Rangers: This is a band that I was particularly excited to see. I've been enjoying their CD for about a year or so, and I was thrilled to see them on the bill this year! As has been mentioned time and again, they did not disappoint! They have a great vibe, a hilarious dry wit, great showmanship and tone for DAYS. I'm so glad that I got to see them 3 times!!
After this show, I was flat out SPENT. As it worked out, Jeff VERY KINDLY put me in touch with Jim Frias, who so generously offered a couch to surf at his Seal Beach apartment for the weekend. Being NO DUMMY, I took him up on this. What a GREAT GUY!!! Sleep and tired be damned... I sat and chewed his ear off about his history and music and life. What a kind man to open his place up to a complete stranger. I'm really glad that Jeff thought of me for this!
After a while, I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, and it was off to rock n roll dreamland before an early rise for the big day....

There was no tequila, but Sunday night there was vodka, and lots of it. Made sitting in LAX all day Monday REALLY fun. :-/
