WHAT:
A special, one of a kind summertime Food & Music Festival at Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge in Alameda - Eat, drink, dance, and be merry, Tiki style! It's a SURFIN' SMORGASBORD!

Sonic Swell presents:
THE FIRST FORBIDDEN ISLAND SURFING MUSIC FESTIVAL!

Sunday August 1, 2010, $10, 2PM doors open, Music at 3
Advance tickets available through BrownPaperTickets.com

Surf Music, the instrumental soundtrack for generations of wave riders comes to the exotic island of Alameda on August 1, 2010.

A music indigenous to California with a beat like the relentless tides of the Pacific, Surf has made fans and influenced musicians worldwide. Since the early 60s when songs like "Pipeline" and "Wipeout" topped the charts, the reverberated instrumental sound's popularity has waxed and waned, but continues with a hardcore following that won't let it die. Quentin Tarantino's 1994 cult classic "Pulp Fiction" brought surf music back into the spotlight and relaunched the career of Dick Dale, and his anthem, "Miserlou", spawned the "Third wave" revival, inspiring a whole new generation of double pickin' gremmies.

Forbidden Island owner Michael Thanos and music booker Will "the Thrill" Viharo have made this island destination, already popular for its world class mixology, a Mecca for touring surf bands and their fans. This timeless brand of pulsating "marine-music" suits the rich tropical/nautical decor of the lounge, and though the sound is much more aggressive than the typical tiki bar exotica you might expect, it makes for a lively, retro-rockin' atmosphere, especially when combined with the exotic elixirs Forbidden Island is famous for. The plan now is to make this initial four-band exposition the first of many future annual, weekend-long events featuring bands from around the world.

Headlining the Surfing Music Festival is Alameda's own Meshugga Beach Party, who can proudly call themselves "The World's Greatest Jewish Surf Band." Dressed as Rabbis they perform traditional Jewish music in a heavy reverb surf style, perfect for dancing the hora in your baggies.

The Wadadli Riders are a trio of Italians who live in Antigua, because the Carribean swells are better than the Mediterranean surf. The band frequently tours Europe and this show is the first stop of their summer US tour.

Frankie & The Pool Boys is a new group created by Ferenc Dobronyi, leader of the Bay Area's long running psychedelic surf band Pollo del Mar. Dobronyi wanted to play in a style reminiscent of his early 60's heros, so he assembled the finest players around, including drummer Naotaka Seki of the Surf Coasters, who will be flying in from Japan for this tour.

Straight outta San Pablo come The Deadbeats, the youngest surf band on the scene. Their style is blistering, ear popping, speed surf. The Deadbeats are the future of surf music– passionate about the genre, with the chops to take it new and wonderful places.

All this, and for extra saucy, sizzling sex appeal - live Go-Go dancers!

Hmmmmmm????

sounds interesting and amazing.
I really want to come up for this.
But....
I was gonna work Mon. Tues. Wed. the next week,
to have 4 day weekend for the SG101 weekend.

How to get the money to go,
and how to make the schedule work.
Wish it was on the sat. the day before.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Totally...
I wish I could make this too.
My boss made it sound like I was asking for the world, having two weekends off in August, so asking for another is out of the question.

No doubt, this will be good.

This show should be pretty cool. I've only been to Forbidden Island once but man it was fun. I can't remember what exactly it was for but we played and I think it was Danny's birthday. Anyways, hope to see some of you there.

The Deadbeats

That was the one that also had the Tomorrowmen and the Mach IV.

^^Yeah that was a fun show! Forbidden Island is a good time and I'm sure this show will be the same. Plus this is looking like a much bigger deal than I expected! Very cool! Sweeet poster and nice writeup for the bands. Ferenc, was that your doing?

Ha! It's been a while since I saw this video. Great footage and killer song. It's one of my favorite Danny tunes for MBP. That and "S'Vivon". BTW I love the lil' ducky on Karen's keyboard. Im excited to see all bands: MBP, Frankie..., and the Waddali Riders. See ya'll at Forbidden Island.

The Space Rangers indeed showed up, and played an inspired set. Forbidden Island was packed. I don't know how they can legally oversell the capacity, but hopefully it meant a good payout for the bands, all of whom played great.

The Deadbeats opened, and blew me away with talent and feel beyond their young ages. I shudder to think what these guys will do as they naturally grow as a band.

This was Frankie and the Pool Boys' first gig! Despite just one band rehearsal, they played like they'd been playing together for decades. Tony was rock solid on Danelctro bass. Danny ruled on mostly rhythm guitar. His acoustic rhythm on "Ewa" was very cool, as was Karen's keyboards doing call-and-response leads with Ferenc on the tune. Karens keys were great the whole set. Ferenc... I mean Frankie was, as usual, stellar. Naotaka Seki was nothing short of astonishing, literally "owning" these songs after just one rehearsal. His between song banter with the audience always brings a smile to my face, and I'm glad that Frankie had him come up to the mike and say a few words. "Ewa" was a real highlight for me, but the whole set was full of highlights. They played most of the F&tPB's CD (all great!), and did killer versions of "Tsunami Struck", "Dreams", "The Cruel Sea" and "Surf Party". Very impressive first show. I don't see how they could get much tighter.

The Space Rangers' surprise appearance was incredible. Great musicians, terrific songs, and that Euro vibe. A+.

The Wadadli Riders were 3 piece this time around, with Lorenzo playing KILLER guitar. He's such a great drummer that it just doesn't seen fair that he plays guitar as well as nearly anybody. They did all originals, except for one Los Straitjackets tune ads a tribute to Daddy-O-grande, and his current condition. Nicki's bass playing is as good as it gets, and the drummer was very good.

Meshugga Beach Party KILLED, as always. Great musicians, terrific tunes, great schtick. How can you not love these guys and gal???

The food thing was in my opinion, a disappointment, and overhyped. And the bands really needed a bigger venue. But it was a great day, and an awesome way to start an incredible week of surf in California.

Thanks for the review Bob.
Damn, I still wish I could have been there.

and they really need to do something about the neighbors, and start having bands in the parking lot there.

It was a day show, it should have been fine.
but I know, it's Alameda, (i.e. sleepy little community)
