Yep. I picked it up roughly ten years ago at a record swap. It was never officially distributed but I was told that Smallin himself was making copies and selling them to fans and that's how it got around. You can get a copy of it on the Video Beat website. It's no Citizen Kane but very fun to watch for archivists like us who dig seeing some really rare footage of the not-so-well documented birth of surf music. Here's the link... http://www.thevideobeat.com/store/music-documentaries/california-surf-music.html

Locking tuners: Worth the money?

Like synhro, I've been locking the tail of the string under the first wrap ever since I started playing guitar Xteen years ago and I can't say I have much in the way of tuning problems.

I've got a Rickenbacker 330 that will stay in tune for weeks, and an Eastwood Sidejack that is pretty good as well. I think oiling the machineheads if there is a provision for it helps quite a bit.

Do locking tuners make you lazier so you don't check your tuning much? I was always told to tune your guitar everytime you play it, not only does it sound better, it also trains your ear and improves your 'pitch'. If that makes any sense!

A lot of the stuff from their first album is definitely surf. A lot of has more in common with Link Wray, on the other hand.

Personally I've never heard that much surf influence in SMOASP. The feel and mood just isn't the same. There is no doubt they influenced a lot of 90's surf bands though. I remember reading that MoAM cited them as an early influence. The Penetrators also covered a few of their songs.

Quote:

They're certainly as surf as MOAM. Which is to say, sorta. Close enough.

Nah, I don't think so, but it's a fine line and a taste thing.

Another important band from the late 80's was the Raybeats. Again, not technically surf per-se but they played some surf songs and great Link Wray covers. Danny Amis from Los Straitjackets was a member for a while (he played bass I think) and they recorded his "Calhoun Surf", which he had written with his surf band from Minneapolis prior to that.

I think Good Cop Bad Cop, Musical Interlude, Theme From TV, Bennett Cerf, Egypt Texas, Spy School Graduation Theme, 13, Peas Porridge Rock and others definitely count as surf tunes. Most of those early ones mentioned have a surf beat and all of those mentioned have surfy melodies. They're a little overdriven, but a lot of modern surf bands use overdrive too. I know Brian Connelly hates the "surf" label, but the fact is he wrote a lot of surf songs, albeit in his own distinctive style.

I agree. Peas Porridge Rock is essentially Mr. Moto. I always found the fact that it directly followed "We're Not a Fucking Surf Band" in Sport Fishin' track list to be yet another tongue in cheek joke. Kind of like "we're not a surf band...or are we?" I'd call them a surf band that doesn't fit the trad mold. If the Mermen are a surf band, Shadowy Men are even more of a surf band. It's just surf that goes off the beaten path and is not intentionally surf. The problem I think is that as a genre, surf is so obscure that virtually 99% of those who play it do so intentionally to recreate the same surf sound. Shadowy Men might be that 1% that created it by accident and wasn't trying to be apart of the surf revival. I'd say the same goes for bands inspired by The Shadows.

I figured out how to post images, Thanks for the help.
These are two different ways to get more of a jag tone out of a Strat., of course it is not going to sound just like a Jag. The bridge makes a big difference as does the keeper and other factors. The one way I replace a tone pot. with a push/pull pot, this keeps the strat's tone controls the same. The other way I use 1 tone control for all 3 pickups and replace the 2nd pot. with a switch, this way is cheaper. Both of these allow you to play the bridge & neck pickups together, by putting the selector on bridge & turning on the neck pickup with the other switch. If the guitar has a 5 position switch you can turn on all 3 pickups.
