help with diagnosing a reverb unit problem

In the last week both of my reverb units have been acting up, in exactly the same way, strangely enough. I would be playing normally and out of the blue the volume (gain) would drop by about 50%. I have to unplug the cord from the reverb unit input jack and plug it in again, and then it sounds fine again - for a few songs, anyway. I tried this with a couple of different amps and guitars, so I'm sure it's the reverb units acting up. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm suspecting it's bad tubes, but which ones? I'd hate to change all the tubes on both units, as they're vintage tubes and not cheap. I'm hoping somebody could point to a single culprit.

Thanks in advance.

It's actually a "2003 Custom Shop NAMM relic 1963 Jazzmaster", one of 12 Fender built for the Winter music merchants trade show in Anaheim that year.

Each was a different custom color, this was the only Fiesta Red one. These had '63 neck profiles, non-slab fingerboards with clay dots, and slightly different pickup specs, all nitro lightly reliced finishes and matching headstocks. It was a very lucky ebay find a couple of years ago, especially since Fiesta Red is my favorite custom color.

Like many Custom Shop guitars, it had a lousy factory setup (I've found the AVRI's to be much better out of the box, probably thanks to Dave Wronski). My pal Eddie Katcher made it right...it is a great player now.

Here's a shot of the 2003 NAMM Jazzmasters on display.

He was dismissed from the band because (direct quote) he "refused to treat Ryan like Elvis" after Adams walked offstage in a hissy fit a couple of songs into a show in Japan where fans had waited for him to play the outdoor show in the pouring rain for hours. Personally I think he's whiny and OCD, and having met him and spoken to him just reinforced this impression. I have a couple of funny stories about him, but instead I'll tell a much funnier story about someone who isn't even remotely famous.

A musician I know named (for the sake of protecting his identity) S. who is a raging alcoholic, took a whole bunch of acid and went for a walk in the woods. Later that evening he calls up another friend of mine, and tells him "you've got to come over - I am scared shitless and I need you to come and help me."

So my friend says "calm the fuck down S., call me tomorrow when you're sober" but S. kept persisting that my friend should come over.

He said "I went for a walk in the woods and I saw a gnome, and I snuck up on the gnome and I caught it with my jacket and I brought it home and locked it in the cupboard. I was high on acid and I didn't know what the fuck I was doing, but now I'm scared and I don't know what to do with the gnome or why I brought it here, and I'm scared to go to sleep with that thing in my cupboard! What if it gets out and attacks me in my sleep? We have to go back to the woods and release it before it gets hungry."

So my friend goes over to S.'s house and they go to the kitchen and S. opens the cupboard (not before building up the suspense by going on and on about the gnome and how it was sitting on a tree stump in the woods and how it looked just like a man only much smaller), and inside the cupboard there's a 4 year old child.

The child had been reported missing by his parents earlier that day and was lost in the woods. I guess the kid had been out in the woods alone for a good 7 or 8 hours before S. caught him.

Luckily my friend was not too drunk, and had the presence of mind to tell S. that they should call the police and that S. shouldn't do any of the talking.

So the police came, asked the child if S. had hurt him or touched him in any inappropriate way, and the kid said "no" because luckily they didn't ask him "did he lock you in a cupboard" and the child was too young/tired/traumatized to tell them on his own.

To make the story funnier, the next day S. was in all the newspapers being called a "hero" for rescuing the missing child, and was even made an honorary fireman and given the keys to the town hick town he comes from.
