Being a strat player, I use roundwounds. I used to play with Fender 010s, then Daddario 010s, later I tried Ernie Ball 010s Regular Slinkys which are great! This was before I started playing surf music...
After that, I decided to go with 011s. I started to work at a local music store and tried out Dean Markley strings because I had discount  . First, I tried DM Signature Series Nickel Steel strings. Let me tell you, I hated them. They were awful. And I tried various packs... Finally, I tried Dean Markley Blue Steel 11-52s. They are awesome!! I just love them. They sure sound fantastic and have a long life!
Yet, I wanna try Earnie Ball 011s...

I've always been a fan of Thomastik Swing 12s. Great feel and tone and they last a helluva long time (which is good considering their price). I think they're especially well suited to Fender offsets.

I use round wound 12's but with a non wound G string. Currently looking to finally settle on a specific brand. I'm a strat player but I'll soon be getting the new Fender Marauder which has a strat bridge (I will immediately replace it with an authentic classic strat bridge!) Considering DMs Blue Steels, Rotosound purples, Thomastiks, ....Does anyone know which one of these have an UNwound G string ...or can recommend another brand of 12s that does? I'm a bender so I can't have that G string wound. Last brand I tried was the Elixers nanoweb which had a wound G. I also wack the strings pretty damn hard so they should be sturdy. Am I looking at Blue Steels after all? Thanks!

Plain Gs are less common in sets (of 11s or 12s). I just buy the set and then buy a bunch of plain .019 or .020 singles and stick them on the 3rd (instead of the wound 3rd that invariably comes with the set)

I'll use DAddario Chromes 11-50 and have tried the DR Blues (nickle wound) 11-50, I prefer the Chromes 11-50 swapping the G out for a unwound 19 G and will put these on my Strat, Tele and Epi 56 RI goldtop with P90
The DR blues are decent, except the high E seems to break faster on this set than any other 11 gauge set.

I have tried many strings but in my case the best solution is Ernie Ball Power Slinky 0,11-0,48 Custom gauge/ nickel wounds. I love the sound which thay create and they last in my use very long time!

I just put on a set of GHS Big Core Nickel Rockers 10.5-48 on my DiPinto Galaxie IV. I had always used D'Addario 10s before. I don't know why. I've never really experimented with anything else until now. My local guitar guy told me to try these out. So far, so good.

I like GHS Stainless Steel Precision Flats 12 gauge. They last a long time, have a nice chime and are quite a bit louder than nickel strings. Plus GHS is fairly local to me, so that's a bonus. But my JM Jag needs the nut setup for the heavier strings so I'm just using the Dunlop 10's for now. They are okay, I like the tone and the stiffness is actually nice on the Jaguar, but the string squeaks are driving me crazy!

I always thought that 10's might give that real springy drip Ala The Trashmen, and that heavier strings would cut down on the "click", perhaps getting more "thud" on palm muting. I know that there are a million different amp/string/guitar combinations for Surf, but what would get me closest to "Kuk" from the Trashmen? I'm using a VM Jag, RI tank, and a silverface Twin. Any opinions (of course there are), or facts?

Update: After about a week with the D'Addario Chrome flats on my Jazzer they started to sound dull (as in lifeless). I found D'Addario EXL117's (.011 to .056 round wounds, plain 3rd) at Just Strings on line and they are awesome. And the big string tone hasn't gone away with time and playing (more than a month), nice and percussive without sounding "jazzy". Definitely helped with the "drip". As an aside I also put a set of EXL116's (.011 to .052) on my Les Paul replica and it tightened up the bottom nicely.

Depending on the guitar, for surf I use either 11 flatwounds, or 10-52 roundwounds. Different instruments react to heavy strings differently - some like them, others you feel like you're fighting for every note, especially the bent notes.

I just "upgraded" to 13-56s (Ernie Ball)... I guess the 12s really helped strengthen the ol' digits, because I don't notice much of a difference...

Strat = Daddario Pure Nickel 11-49
Telecaster (new fender '52 american vintage) = Daddario Pure Nickel 10-45
Epi '56 Goldtop = Daddario Pure Nickel 11-49
I could swap either one of these for Daddario Chromes 10-48.
For some reason the Tele sounds best with 10's even though I prefer 11's they just stiffed the sound of the tele. 10's seem to have a nice air'yness to them, doesn't hit the pickup as hard as 11's and tonally pretty much the same as 11's. I may try 10's all the way around and I've been using 11-50 for about 25 years.

Have you tried changing the pickup height on your Tele when changing gauges? You might find that lowering them slightly might bring back the "air" with 11's...
