I'm going to setup my Jaguar and I'm thinking about going down to 10 flats. Because of the scale length will it be pretty slack? Should I go for hexcore for added tension? |

Depends on the set, some flats are heavy on top even if the high e is 'light'. The low E and sometimes the g is where I have issues on a Jag. All flats but Pyramid and Thomastik are hex core. But yes, a hex core will feel tighter, less floppy. |

I was looking at either Pyramid or Thomastik since I never tried those before although I'm torn about paying double what La Bella strings cost. |

I love them, but the thought of paying more than $5 per set of strings just doesn't appeal to me. The flatwound strings last a while, but plain strings are dead in about a month for me, if it is a guitar I play regularly. It is just hard to find nickel single strings to replace them with that are of the same quality. |

I'm currently using .10 Thomstik flats on my jag, and they feel great and not overly-floppy at all, though floppiness is of course an extremely subjective term. To me, they have about the same tension as .09 rounds on my 25.5 scale guitars. — |

Keep the wound ones on and replace the solid strings when they go. More mileage off the low end. Single strings can be purchased from D'Addario. I don't know if you have tried them. —Last edited: Oct 13, 2014 12:26:47 |

I think Jake was referring to the plain (unwound) strings in the high-dollar import sets being of higher quality than the typical D'Addario/GHS/Ernie Ball plain single. In particular, Thomastik-Infeld uses a brass flash-plating on their plain strings that prolongs their life considerably (they can be bought as singles from Juststrings.com, btw). Pyramid plains are more highly polished than most others and will also last somewhat longer for many users. (And just for the record, plain strings are made of steel, not nickel ...) I usually go with a D'Addario roundwound 11-49 set, but now I have Black Diamond flats in 12-52. —http://facebook.com/diagnosticrecords Last edited: Oct 24, 2014 04:13:25 |

I have been thinking that 11's may be a little too heavy for my personal preference. Would 10's be a good compromise, or is it not even worth it to go from factory 9's to 10's? For the record, it's on my Fender American Special Strat. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. |

I bit the bullet and am having 11-49's put on my strat. I dropped it off at Guitar Center today. They told me it may be a week before I get my baby back! —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. |

Hey guys, I upgraded from 9-42's to 11-49's on my Strat, but have noticed a fairly loud vibration noise while playing. It doesn't travel through the amp, but it's still kind of annoying. Is this sound normal? For the record, I did have a professional setup done at GC. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. Last edited: Dec 08, 2014 12:15:03 |

I've been using Dunlop's Heavy Core .11's for the last year or so and have been incredibly satisfied by them. —The Phantomatics on Facebook |

Pyramid Gold nickel flatwounds .011-.048 on mid-60s Jaguar and Jazzmaster. Higher upfront cost but the tone is great and strings last a long time... Last edited: Feb 09, 2015 21:25:31 |

I've gone through Pyramid, Thomastiks. D'ddarrio and Ernie Ball and prefer the Ernie Ball Pure nickel ones. I thought Pyramids were even better but I couldn't get my hybrid gauge (9s to 460) easily so now it's pretty much just Ernie Ball. I use 10s on my Jaguar and Les Pauls, and 9 to 46 on Mosrites |

Another satisfied Pyramid customer here. I play Pyramid Gold 12s on my Jaguar and absolutely love them for their tone, feel, and longevity. I usually switch the wound G-string for a plain .019, though, as it lends itself better to G-string bendings.
