The newly released Lee Ranaldo solo album. Nels Cline plays on several tracks. Not as Sonic Youthesque as I expected. Very straight ahead songwriting, but very well done. —Ryan |

Also, not as good as Thurston Moore's solo album, which I really enjoyed. Kind of weird since I've always enjoyed Lee's Sonic Youth songs more than Thurston's. |

Ivan - Yay Rising Sun, Takeshi is an unsung mastermind. Also I've always thought that Golden Earrings would make a great surf song and I found this one tonight on YouTube, I'm hoping there are other surf renditions. —Jeremy |

Matt22-I was so sure that someone else had done it, the ventures of course! Lets never say they're not surf. They have these moments. —Jeremy |

Jake, not surprising, given that Harrison's backing band was basically Derek & the Dominoes just months before they recorded Layla! I've been getting to know this album bit by bit, and there are a few songs that rub me the wrong way, but overall it's quite astonishing. The title track is a deeply gorgeous song, pure goosebumps city. At least half of the album is stuff where I'm just in disbelief at how good it is. Though I'm a huge Beatles and McCartney fan, All Things Must Pass has somehow eluded me through all these years. I've definitely been missing out. Harrison was on a pretty amazing streak from '68 until '70. The stuff he did with the Beatles in '68-'69 is mindblowing: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Long Long Long, Savoy Truffle, I Me Mine, For You Blue, Old Brown Shoe, Something, Here Comes The Sun - whoa... And then to add to that All Things Must Pass... And the lyrical content is pretty unbelievable for a 25-27-year-old. An old soul, for sure. Jeremy, Golden Earrings by the Hunters - YES! GREAT song! They released that back in the early '61. It's not really surf, they were a UK instro band (they actually stepped in for the Shadows as Cliff Richard's backing band a few times around '60-'61 when the Shads were unable to play). And what a find with that video of the Spotnicks in the '70s! Though, also - yikes! The '70s were not good. Look how thin Bo Winberg is, damn! With that beard and hair, he looks like he's been marooned on some island with no food for a month! They sounded quite good, though, especially on Amapola, love that song. And yes, Terry Takeshi is incredible. What a player! What a sound! —Ivan Last edited: Mar 30, 2012 08:03:11 |

Yeah, there are too many tracks, lots of throwaways. If it was made into a shorter album I feel it would rival any Beatles album, but it does have stuff I want to skip every time, and I do skip it every time. The songwriting is very impressive, George put a lot into those songs. |

Speaking of, I think George was a better lead player before he found that lazy slide sound. Prior to that, he played what a tune needed--flamenco, rockabilly, rock'n'roll, raga, etc. After that, same freakin' slide solo, every freakin' song, seems like. —Radio Free Bakersfield--60 Minutes of TWANG, CRUNCH, OOMPH. |
