We have a place in Bristol VA call Blue Circle. Small cheap and delicious. Imagine White Castle burgers only better.

Imagine White Castle burgers only better.

That actually doesn't seem that hard to do.
There was a few White Castles out here on the West Coast in the 80s for a few months.
My Mom loved them, (had them in Minnesota when she was a kid)
but my Dad and I didn't care for them, and see what all the hubbub was about, and they went out of business soon after.

White Castle burgers taste like vomit.... literally. The cheap beef and onions they use taste pretty gross. They are very common on the East Coast.. especially in low income areas.

After a hard night of drinking in L.A. we would go to The Original Tommy's for an in your face chili cheeseburger, chili cheese fries, chili cheese dogs piled high with onions and thick slices of tomatoes and plenty of those hot little yellow peppers. The smell would linger in your car for days if you chose to eat in your car. They make doubles and even triple chili burgers if you ask and open 24 hours to boot! image

We're looking at coming over to California next year; when I mentioned that to a guy in the local music store, the first thing he said was "Man, you gotta check out a Tommy's Burger".... Laughing

Best burger for me was a place called Kermond's Burgers at Warnambool, which is a town down on the south end of Australia. Only ever went there once while I was on my Honeymoon - 15 years later I can still remember the name of the place, & I can still taste that damn burger!! Razz

white castles are around the midwest too. down south we have krystal and they are nasty too! we call 'em gut grenades.
but this thread is about GOOD hamburgers! from the 70's i'm bringing out the ollie burger from ollie's trolley. great in its day!! haven't seen one in 20 years or more.

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

FUJI'S FAMOUS BURGER

This thread got me thinking about some of the great burger places I've been to over the years. Back in the late 70's me and my skate buddies used to hit this place all the time, their bacon-avo-teriyaki burger was the bomb! Had no idea it was still around - think I'll be headin' back soon...

HELLDIVER on Facebook

Last Oct.'09 Jeff and I went over to Arizona on a 4 day trip. Checked out the "HUT" on 4th st and ate dinner at Kon Tiki, in Tucson. Then up to Phoneix for the show he was DJing at. Surfside 4 was playing with the Swank Bastards.
We went to the Heart attack Grill for their Bypass burgers and Flatliner Fries.
Each burger weighs 1/2 lb,so I had a single and Jeff had a 1 pound double cheeseburger with a load of Flatliner fries, all you can eat. Real Coca Cola made in Mexico with real cane suger. WOW, It tasted like 1964 to me. I'm a diabetic and have to watch my sugar intake, but it was soooooo good, I chugged it down and ordered another to drink with my burger and fries. While our burgers were cooking ,Jeff watched the girl grilling the food throw in a fist sized glob of LARD into the deep fat fryer for the fries. No wonder they taste so good.

One more thing, if a customer comes in they put a hospital gown on you and give you a wrist band. All the waitress girls dress in short white skirts and hats that look like nurses. If you weigh more than 350 lbs, you eat for FREE. My 400 lbs was no match for that wimpy scale and locked it up tight. FREE FOOD!!

If we go back to AZ. I'm eating there again. $2 cokes and a big tip.

Craig the Keg.

Hodad makin' the scene with a six pack.

you forgot the part where she was putting on rubber surgical gloves,
(to grab the big gob of Lard).
I asked her if I should bend over.

Krystal and White Castle Burgers are sent from Heaven. But, judging them based on actual 'burgers' is a bit unjust. That is like comparing a Totino's Party Pizza with a good Chicago Deep Dish. They are in classes all their own.

So... I visited California recently and will mention three places that I got burgers in Southern California and really enjoyed...

  1. Umami Burger (Studio City, CA) - Burger with house made Truffle Cheese
  2. Hopping Pig (San Diego, CA) - Burger with Gouda, Fried Egg, Fried Onions, BBQ Sauce
  3. The Local Peasant (Sherman Oaks, CA) - Peasant Burger - Burger, Cheese, Onion, Fried Egg and "Special" Sauce

Hopping Pig and the Local Peasant had some pretty good drinks as well.

"Mad Madelines" in Temecula makes GREAT burgers. New place called "Grampz Hotdogs" says their burgers are better. If their hotdogs are any indication, they just might be. I'll find out Super Bowl Sunday.

On a more positive note, I tried this place in Oahu last month & would rate it top 5. Reminded me of the burgers at Hodad's in SD.

Got a free burger with Swiss cheese at sunday nights gig, as such it tasted pretty darn good, though not as good as the three free glasses of red Zinfandel I scarfed down.

got one to add to the list. newly discovered this winter in huntsville, utah at the shooting star saloon. i'm not much into burgers but the shooting star burger is really, really good.
