Ventures "In the Vaults Vol. 5" comfortably resides alongside Ace's other excellent Ventures in the Vaults collections."Getaway" is an excellent unreleased track that sounds to be from the era of their Twist albums. "Ups n' Downs" is an alternate version of a tune from their first album. This version features drums more present in the mix. "Ventures Stomp" (aka Gandy Dancer) was first featured on the 2nd Vaults issue. This sounds very much the same but has an additional lead guitar part that was missing from the earlier release. The sound quality sounds to be a generation removed leading me to believe the lead was added during a mix-down to the master tape. "Bogle's" tune is a favorite in this collection in the vein of "Meet Mr. Callahan". "Sealed With A Kiss" sounds brilliant and less produced than the version that was presented on the Million Dollar Weekend album. "Country Gravy (Turkey in the Straw)" is fun and clearly an out-take from the Mashed Potatoes & Gravy album. "Lady of Spain" revisits a track from the first Vaults album. This recording is in true stereo and with much better overall sound quality than the previous version. "Lonely One" is a great find. It's a studio version of a tune that was only heard by the Ventures on a live bootleg of a 1962 Oregon radio performance. The icing on this cake is the inclusion of the remaining studio live performances that originally appeared as fake live cuts on the On Stage Around the World album (the balance were released on Vaults 4). There are several other highlights in the collection. -Marty

Excellent choices, Carol! I'm sure you'll love them all.

Dirty Fuse have their own fairly unique take on surf music, and it took me a few listens to start 'getting it', but the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it. It's a very creative and cool CD - and it features two exclusive tracks written by the great Jim Skiathitis of the Atlantics! Dirty Fuse do both wonderful tracks justice, too, which made me very happy!

Another excellent album! Jari has the whole eleki style and sound DOWN, absolutely nails it (though minus some of the eleki histrionics - Jari always plays it tasteful). The band is fantastic, too, really gets the feel and sound of eleki surf. If you love Yuzo Kayama, this is the CD for you! My favorites: Golden Gambler, Gasping Runner, Space Glider and Flow Waves. After Stormy Weather is a really cool dark ballad, too. I must admit I could have done without another cover of Penetration or Take On Me; and Cindy Lauper's "She Bop" is so-so - it's just not a very strong song, though the Shockwave! do their level best with it. Outside of that gripe, the rest of the CD is just great - stick to the originals in the future, fellas! And truly well-done!

Thank you very much Ivan! I´m very pleased those words you wrote Very Happy now I believe better what I do. Smile cheers!

I had no idea that the Atlantics (what a name for a band from Oz) had a Greek guitarist!

I hear the Dirty Fuse often on NSSR and dig them greatly – the Greek melodic sensibility is so applicable to surf music, it's just natural that Greeks (and Balkans and Russians) ought to excel in it.

I just bought Laika & the Cosmonauts' "Zero Gravity", Phantom Surfers w/Davy Allen "Skaterhater" & MoAM? "Experiment Zero" all used at Amoeba in Hollywood. .IvanP wrote:

Actually, all four of the original members are either pure Greeks or have some Greek blood! The two pure Greeks are Skiathitis and Penglis (the two guitarists) - very Greek names. If you have any interest in reading more about this amazing band - and finding out why an Aussie band would name itself The Atlantics - check out these two recent Continental magazines, with an exhaustive 2-part interview done by yours truly over the past year or two.

I was just in London and as I mentioned in another thread, I picked up "Dance With The Shadows" original mono lp and an lp compilation of "The Best of John Barry Seven and Orchestra 1958-1961".

I'm looking for Dumb Loud Hollow Twang the original version but it ain't happening for under $73. It is an autographed vinyl copy but I really need to not do that. Sigh...
