I actually like my telecaster a lot for surf music. It has the kind of twang that i am looking for. It doesnt have a vibrato arm, but that forces me to find creative ways to arcieve a similair sound (however it will never sound like a vibrato arm) And strangely enough, my ibanez steve vai guitar sounds quite good for some softer surf tones too. It isnt as snarly but a bit softer and the double locking trem wont go out of tune. However i would really like a jazzmaster or a jaguar someday.

I can't pick a favorite out of the three that I own: 2012 Am Std Strat, 2013 Custom '60, and 2014 AVRI '65 Jazzmaster. There are things I love about each of them. The Strat is best for cutting through the mix; especially when clean. It's got that twang. The Jazzmaster is much more mellow and fuller on the bottom end. They both sound great clean or overdriven and it just depends on the song being played. I like the Strat for Diamond Head/Joker's Wild type songs but prefer the Jazzmaster for Walk Don't Run/Surf Rider type songs. The Custom 60 is right in between in terms of tone. It also has the best (or at least simplest) tremolo mechanism of the 3 in my opinion. If I were to play a gig and have the ability to bring all three to switch between, I'd probably play the Custom 60 about 50% of the songs and slit the other 50% evenly between the two Fenders. But we are a band that was inspired by bands like MoAM? so the Hallmark just works perfectly for a lot of our material. —Kevin |

My favorite right now is the Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet with a Bigsby, because it's all I have right now. I've always been a Strat guy, so I'll eventually get another one. I do love this Gretsch though! —Either you surf, or you fight. |

Guitars like this 1488 generate mixed emotions in me. The first emotion is pure joy, what a gem! DeArmonds, neck binding and inlays, RED! Then a sadness comes over me, what happened to the owner, did they get drafted, go to Vietnam and not come home? Man what downer I am today. Sorry, Now back to our regular programing. — |

caddady, If it makes you feel any better, more often than not I find the story on these budget guitars to be some thing like "Little Jane or John got a guitar for Christmas, took a few lessons and discovered it was difficult and quit" Often because the guitars played badly from the factory or because it made their fingers hurt. Thanks - that Silvertone is sweet! And I couldn't agree more on the budget acquisitions, Jeff. Here is a 1977 Guild S-60 I bought off my neighbor in college in '88 for $25 and a calzone. He got it as a kid and "never got the hang of it." It's still one of my favorite humbucker guitars. And it's RED! Recent searches shows them going for 4 figures. |

My new favorite surf guitar... it's a '61 reissue SG (sorry about initial date) that was customized to look like Cipollina's guitar. If you look closely, the knobs even have mercury head times inlaid on the top. The paint job was done by Southbound Custom in Nashville and the re-build was done by SF Guitarworks, and the knobs were machined by SOMA precision.
