What year is your Rickenbacker? My '80 had pretty hot pickups. It might overdrive the front end of your amp, but Fender was always on a quest for fidelity. Has your amp been serviced in the last decade. Also consider the condition of the speaker, whether a new one of extension may improve fidelity.

DONT MOD THE GUITAR! Adjust your 'balance' knob to lessen the bass response before you do anything. (God, I miss my Rick! I was an arsewhole to sell it.)
Audition an extension cab, and maybe try a plug-in solid state rectifier for the Fender amp. That's a cheap and reversible 'mod' that can give you lots more clean front end, esp. in conjunction with a doubled speaker diffusion in a second cab.
