NGD: Yamaha SGV 800

It really is a Samurai guitar, built with a kind of precision and uncompromising quality (for a production guitar) that is impressive. The attention to detail is really exceptional. That I found this nearly-new SGV 800 only 47 miles away from my home (thanks to Crumble for pointing out brand new eBay listing yesterday) is providential; the fact that it fairly matches my amp's naugahyde is uncanny. I can see the design owes something to Mosrite, but altogether the guitar is utterly original. I haven't played it very loud yet so I don't know how distinctive its voice is. Cosmtically this guitar is 10out of 10. I even found a tiny scrap of the pickguard cover membrane stuck to the p'up switch bezel. I think previous owner must have just loved to look at it rather than play it. This is my first Yamaha electric so I have nothing to compare it to. It's nothing like any Fuji-Gen Gakki or Matsumoku guitars I have owned, nor my recently-purchased Fillmore Mosrite. It's made at Yamaha's Kaohsiung, Taiwan factory, and its metallurgy has that Taiwan quality to it: thick glossy chrome and sand-cast aluminum like high-quality bicycle parts. i'm surprised that so few guitars come out of Taiwan as their material and craftsmanship is so good. Anyhow, it's late and I'm tired from the long drive to and from the purchase, so I'll get back tomorrow with better pictures shot in natural light, maybe with my amp for comparison of color. — Squink Out! This guitar is just unlike anything I've held before. I was spoiled as a teen on a Strat and Rickenbacker 360 which were marvelous sculpted things but this SGV has similar appeal. As for re-covering my Bassmas cab, I think not. For one, it's original Drip-Edge ca. 1969, in good shape. Second, black goes with everything. If later I get a custom cab built, I may match it to the custom head cab. But I had better play really well with such a conspicuous rig! — Squink Out! Top

I proffered several famous dealers as future references, along withe the Vintage Guitar Price Guide and Bluebook of Guitar Values. I wonder why they didn't have any of this stuff before. They are used to one-size-fits-all bigbox online merchants, but dealing with me forced them to look at lot closer into old gear. Thank God my Jag was overlooked by the punk that broke in! I did notice in all this process, that prices for vintage, and even good used gear, just keep rising and I don't see what is driving a lot of it. Wages have been stagnant and there is no bubble economy. I don't get it. — Squink Out! Top

Rise of Romanticism, in face of a cruel, digital world. c. Lesser items left in good shape. d. Lack of imagination, or a youthful, experimental spirit.
