re: Brian's recent April Fool's Day gag about SG101 becoming Golf Music 101- check out the official MySpace page for The Tornadoes which contains this quote:
"GERALD SANDERS is an original member of the band and is the lead vocalist and bass player. He lives in Redlands, Ca. with Marilyn his wife of 33 years. They have 2 adult boys neither of which are musicians. Gerald's day job is as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).His pet peeve is with " surf music purists" who seem offended when a vocal is included on a CD or concert set list. Gerald says at this stage of his life he is considering developing a genre of instro music that will fit his current lifestyle i.e. golf music. He says it would have a driving sound."
It would have a DRIVING SOUND!!!
Someone please contact The Tornadoes and tell them that there humor and knowledge are welcome here at SG101!

pfff, that Gerald Sanders is such a poser. I mean c'mon, he doesn't play a late 80's Flying V, he doesn't wear kaki slacks. that's not real golf music!
awesome find Ferenc!!!! Id love to hear this guy's take on what's happening at sg101
EDIT: I just noticed that he tornadoes' myspace profile was created only two days ago - could it be that they got the joke from sg101?

Now that you mention it, I recall seeing that quote on their non-myspace web page.

Uh, what about the Ultras' Fearless Putter on Water Logged? I could go for some more of that.

Yeah, I liked that tune. They even announced it as golf music with a whole sportscaster narrative.
The first recorded golf song perhaps? It was a joke though.

I think Euclid established that two points define a line. So, perhaps two songs, even jokes, define a genre? Or would a genre be more like a plane? In that case, a third song would do it. Maybe Driving Guitar?

Maybe Man or Astroman's "What remains inside a Blackhole" cd
was a golf music cd.

OK, it turns out there's a lot of covert "Golf Sound" out there. People just overlook it. Probably because the spelling on CDDB is so attrocious. A few samples I've been able to dig up:
Night Sticks The Ocean is Not for Cowards Pollo del Club
_Stickman_ Into the Blue Sparkle Low Pars
_Hit Man_ Rough Surf, Rough Mix, Live in Berlin Low Pars
Now I understand the reference in the title! And Rosarito 3-Day - I thought that was something you got from a bad taco, but maybe it's some golf tournament?
Stick-y Rare Surf 2 ???
_Paris Green_ Henry, Call Home King of the PGA
_Green Tambourine_ Cinema Surf Superforms
_Sand Pumper_ Superforms are Go! Superforms
_Green Sunshine_ KFJC 1999 Surf Compilation ???
_Green Onions_ The Ventures Play Telstar and Other Golf Music Ventures
_Night Drive_ Walk-Don't-Run - The Best of the Ventures Ventures
Driven Insane Rare West Coast Gold Instrumentals ???
Sand Traps Go Vermillion Surf Sensation Mel-Tones
Quick Sand Cactus Stingray Sandblasters
Sandtrap Changing Tides Spashback
Iron Lung People of Earth, We are the Golf Pros Neptunes
I'll Go Down Swinging Swing Along with the Straitjackets Straitjackets
Swingin' Creeper Swingin' Creepers! A Tribute to the Ventures Tiki Tones
That Ventures connection again. I see there's a number on this tribute collection by the Huntinton Cads, I see. Short for caddy?
For a whole album, see Mowing the Green Specials by the Mow Green Specials, including, for example, Maplewood Driver. (The final r is omitted - a typo, I think.)
Come to think of it, where can you always find a tiki bar - a golf club!

The SST label 80s instrumentsl band 'Lawndale' was originally formed to play 'golf rock' as opposed to surf rock'... their original logo was atop a golf tee graphic !
