Dude asks for reverb reccomendations, saying he is on a budget. Simple question I think. How did this simple question turn into 4 pages of arguments? Name calling, stories about encounters with famous players, DIY projects and expensive reverb units?
None of these have much to do with the question about budget reverb units.
I don't get it. Male dominance fights?? A bunch of ya'll need to grow up
and get real. No wonder some of the old-timers on the forums are getting disgusted with the site.

Don, that's a great story! A true genius respects any ability, and makes good music. All collaborations should be a dance, not a competition, in my view.

After seeing responses my wife and I watched some of the videos of Don on Youtube. He's better than I am, and definitely want to learn Surf Rider now. I need to get Perfidia down first. One at a time! I think the main argument here is to practice, practice, practice, and "that sound," is something that I will get to. Lots of great advice and some funny stuff too on this thread.
I do have one more "dumb" question. If I am going to spend say $100 to get closer wouldn't a multi effects pedal such as MS-50 be better bang for the buck, than FRV-1? Or is it inferior being that it isn't focused directly to the fender sound, if it's the main goal? The only pedal I've ever used is the DS-1.

Dude! Listen to both pedals and then decide. And it isn't a dumb question! You're seeking knowledge and questions will help your search.

After recently deciding to get serious about surf guitar I learned to play 'Surf Rider' and 'Walk don't run' from vids Don posted on the Strat forum and he also directed me to a backing track for 'Mr. Moto' on this forum. I appreciate that forums can offer something for the experience level of a variety of posters.

Yes, you are right, it would be a lot more bang. You would have many more options, including Don's if you want to go that route. You do not need the drip to get a great sound, in fact a lot of guys use way too much so that it does not sound good at all, at least in a live situation. You don't even need the Fender sound. Don't forget to practice.

I have an MS-50 arriving tomorrow, based on Crazy Ace's recommendation. It will serve multi purposes when playing my non-reverb amps. And if I stay focused on surf guitar and decide the reverb on my DRRI is not "good" enough I can still pick up the Fender pedal or consider putting a Bear together later on.

Your DRRI onboard reverb will be more than good enough.

I agree.
While the drippy splat of the note attack is a very iconic sonic quality of First Wave surf (think "Astronauts") for the most part it is the decay of reverberation that gives notes an atmospheric, sustained effect that makes it sound like it's in an active, living environment.
If more trad surf/'genuine' surf sounds become attractive then sourcing a tube reverb unit or Surfy Bear would be recommended as part of your investigation. There are people that use FRV-1 or Topanga pedals to great effect. As I said in my post above during the dramatic phase of this thread, once you start playing surf in a band mix, the sonic nuances that people will start flame wars over actually are very challenging to distinguish. At the risk of sounding patronizing when I am really at a loss for words to encourage you, rock whatcha got, play with enjoyment, and get lost in the music.

SinNombre,
This older thread could be worth taking a look at.

I have a much higher opinion (but please don't misconstrue me claiming it to be the best) about the Spring Reverb setting since I wrote that original thread. After getting into it and tweaking parameters it works quite well. Check out my comments on the USB upgrade. It's worth the effort. I keep finding many uses for this pedal for all types of music after having it for nearly a year. I hope it serves you well.
Cheers,
Jeff

No doubt. But I have quickly come to the conclusion that the most revered piece of surf guitar gear, more than offset guitars or whammy bars or 15" speakers is the reverb generator. Thus it becomes a quest and passion to find that "sound" from so long ago that evokes another era. I can relate to that, I was there.
So I will be more than happy with my DRRI vintage verb and my new Zoom pedal's digital magic, but may eventually fall prey to the desire to find the "perfect" reverb.

Thanks Jeff, just read your thread. Sounds like you have had plenty of time to evaluate it. I have been using large plastic multi effects pedals that have to remain plugged in but were the only thing available when I bought them. So this rugged little battery operated pedal will be a nice upgrade, especially since it gets good reviews for its effects quality. I'll provide a little feedback when I've had a chance to get familiar with it.
