Howdy, Scott! Though some here may cringe at the mention of humbuckers, on a surf guitar forum, I do have a couple of questions regarding upgrading a Squier Standard Fat Telecaster. Which Seymour Duncan Telecaster bridge pickup would pair well with a Fender Atomic Humbucker neck pickup? Alternately, what combination of SD pickups - Tele bridge/humbucker neck - would yield results similar to the afore mentioned combination?

Hey Scott ,thanks for checking in...always have loved your pickups ,ever since I started playing actually. I am currently using Vintage for jazzmaster in my MIM jazzer and LOVE them... and I have had some compliments on the sound. Thanks for addressing the needs of us surf players

Surfabilly, I don't recall the neck being very hot - so you'd probably be happy with the slightly boosted output and added muscle of the Hot For Tele set. For a neck humbucker the Jazz would work balance wise, though I don't think we have anything that really sounds just like those pickups. You'll find the Jazz plenty articulate.

Thanks for the suggestions, Scott! The only real "trouble" I've had out of this Fat Telecaster is on the neck humbucker alone, and through a bass amp; gets a tad too muddy for my taste. From what I've read at the web site, the Jazz Model would definitely take care of the "mud," and from the Hot For Tele description I would have a nice balance in the middle position.

I'll second that. Except in my tele, not his.

Hey Surfabilly, I think you'd really love the Jazz and it will solve your muddy problems. With that said, this cheap technique really does work: http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/tips-and-tricks/mod-squad-muddy-sounding-neck-pickup/

By the way, if any of you guys do YouTube demos, can you PM me a link to your channels? It would be great to find someone to review a couple of these pups we are discussing.

My experiences with the Seymour Duncan pickups are not good unfortunately.
Yes, I know, a lot of people like them. And I know the Jaguar from Lorenzo really good. His Jag sounds incredibly perfect! BUT it is the basic of the guitar which is good sounding imo.
I once had a pair of SD Antiquity II in a Jaguar and it sounded pretty dead for my ears… With the Pickupwizards it sounded better. Not perfect but better. At last I had to say that this Jag had a poor sounding basic...
However, for Jaguars I prefer definitely the Pickupwizard pickups from Canada.
If I have got a good resonating Jaguar I will give them the pickupwizards. This is my best sound then.
I even have experiences with Jazzmaster SDs: Same… They sounded dead… I missed a character and brillance in tone…
For JM I prefer Fender AVRI or pickupwizards.
And I also know a Jazzmaster from a friend equipped with SD and it sounds great!!
So the pickup question is a VERY individual question.
At last always the same: If you have a good sounding guitar it is good. If you have a poor sounding basic you can t get it really better with expensive pickups.

I really like the PAF 90 style pickups that Seymour designed in my Wilson Brothers Ventures Model guitars. While standing in line with Seymour at a Chet Atkins/Jerry Reed show at McCabes, Seymour told me he was once the president of The Ventures fan club.

hi!
i have some SD antiquity pickups in my thinline jag, and they were an improvement over the stock MIJ pickups. however, I second the request for Mosrite - style pickups (and Filtertrons ...)

I would like to ask Scott if the SD folks are able to assemble an 11-hole Strat pickguard with the Antiquity II Surf set (standard Surf Bridge, RWRP mid, and Surf neck). I would be dropping it into a Jeff Beck Artist series Strat...those Hot Vintage Noiseless are fine for what they are but I prefer the dynamics of 'proper' single coils...I have a P90 Les Paul and a HB Les Paul for those heavier tone requirements.
Despite the limited experience of only hearing them in youtubeland, those Surf pickups have a sweetness to them that really makes my ears perk up.
By comparison, the Cali 50s series seems less sweet but more balanced for multi-purpose. My wallet says "go for the Cali 50s' but my ear says "Antiquity II Surf"!.

Sure Whackystrings, we can definitely do that for you. It's called a shop floor custom, which is basically something that is custom and yet still built on the production floor so the price is either the same or just a tiny bit more. You would ask your favorite music dealer to order it for you just like that.
You can do it with other pickups too, so long as it doesn't require changing the wiring. We have black pickguards as well for those that are interested.

Oops. I had to move with a decision a bit quickly so, given the shortage of Antiquity Surf single coils in my area and the availability of a California 50s Duncan set, that is what I went with. I have already populated the pickguard and will be dropping it in after I get through a couple of band events this week (don't want to tempt fate and show up with a hurriedly put-together guitar).
Plus, my main retailer here has to go through a distribution chain in Ontario and then out to the US distributor...something tells me that this is not the kind of order I can put through and actually have it fulfilled without excessive mark-up and time.
But I appreciate that someone from the SD company was able to respond, all the same. Thanks!
