ERay, I like that Melody Maker, simple yet gets the job done. Nice aged color too. Not enough attention given to one pickup guitars, just use the tone knob-instant second pickup!

Here is my main rig; 1966 Fender Bandmaster, Fender 63 reverb RI and Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster with a GFS JM90 bridge pickup, mustang bridge and 7.25" LRO neck. I also use a Carl Martin Red Repeat.

I've narrowed down the gear to this set-up, in terms of most headroom, ease of carrying and set-up, playability, etc.

What a nice little cab, fenderfan. What is it, a custom 1*12?

Thanks. It's an excellent 1x15 custom cab by JD Newell - I needed the extra volume and punch of a 15" (a Weber California), but in a more portable size. It's working perfectly...

Wow, a 15"er!...Never imagined that in such a small enclosure. So I guess you saved more in terms of space management than in weight. Smile Looks cool though, I wonder how it sounds compared to the regular huge cab.

It actually is lighter than the other 15" cabs I've used, and the sound is still big. We just played an outdoor car show a week ago, and this cab was roaring!

You got it tubesNtweed! I'm a one pickup guy all the way.

Having only wound my way into surf rock within the last couple years, I've cobbled together a more-or-less budget rig that features zero pieces of Fender equipment. Reviews and insights contributed by this community were most helpful, so thanks to all of you for sharing your wisdom. Should I managed to make the next step and get a band together, I'll dig a bit deeper into the wallet and pony up for Fender gear (Jazzmasters haunt my dreams). A delay unit and and tremolo unit would be nice, too. For now, its

-Eastwood Sidejack DLX with 11-gauge D'Addario Jazz Lights
-Texotica reverb unit (that's where I decided most of my $$$ should go)
-Old Peavey Classic 50

It's what you do with it.

Chad's "Pedalboard made from thrift store brief case" is right on! I will post pix of my own, made from a donated aluminum mic case & a thriftstore laptop case. The idea of paying well over $100 for a brandname case gives me SHIVERS.

Squink Out!

OK here 'tis.

Certainly part rock but the Twin and half the peddle board is dedicated to surf. The peddle board is an old guitar case top and the bottom latches on for transport.

This was taken nearly 15 years ago, but it's basically what I'm using now. The Jaguar is one of those blonde LE Jaguars from 1994 and I got the Burns Marquee at the NAMM show when they were first being sold here in the US. Both of these are strung with flatounds. Behind the '72 Twin is an '87 Strat Plus. It has relatively light gauge strings and I used it as a spare or for when I needed to play something bendy.

The reverb unit is a reissue that has been gutted and rewired with a turret board. It's hard to see but there is a vibrato pedal before the reverb unit that is modeled after the Magnatone vibrato. I put the vibrato before the reverb because the reverb mixes the vibrato with itself and intensifies the effect. After the reverb unit is a tremolo pedal modeled after the 'harmonic vibrato' used in some brown and blonde Fender amps. I put it after the reverb to chop up the signal. Despite what the guitar magazines say, the Fender harmonic vibrato circuit does not shift pitch, so putting it before the reverb would only wash out the effect.

The amp has been modified with a power tube bias trem. This type has been used on a few Fender amps but it was very common among other amp makers. So there are three tremulant effects in the signal chain: Magnatone vibrato, Fender's harmonic vibrato, and a smooth amplitude-modulating tremolo built into the amp.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

I'm really a guitar garagiste so my picture isn't as nice as most of youse guys. I live in a tiny 2 br with my wife and daughter in NE LA and my rig has grown so big that I am banished to the garage, which has become my mancave where I do my guitar building, playing and scooter bodywork over the last 3 yrs.
So here is my Frankenrig:
'69 SF Twin in head-only cab perched atop strange custom wedge-shaped closed-back cabs with Altec 12 & 15, surmounted by Gibson Reverb III.
SOme of my guitars are a '99 Danoblaster Baritone, my Solid Gold Teisco Swankcaster & my newly-built Fauxrite in Surfburst green.
