This is a link to a live recording of a show from the Hollywood Bowl in Oct, 1963. Several cool bands played this, and a ton of famous photos taken this day.

I think this is huge, and can hardly wait to hear Live Eddie and The Showmen and The Challengers!

Here's the bands/performers
Part 1: The Routers
Mike Clifford
The Cornells
Paul Petersen
Soupy Sales
The Mixtures
Keith Colley
Eddie & The Showmen
Dodie Stevens
The Fleetwoods
Vic Dana
Duane Eddy
The Honeys
Part 2: The Challengers
Jan & Dean
The Surfaris
Bobby Rydell
The Beach Boys

The Eddie and the Showmen segment starts at about 42 minutes.

I just listened to it, and it's off the hook - unbelievable energy! Huge sound, even on this recording. One big medley of songs, Squad Car, Pipeline, Baja, Miserlou, Telstar, Walk, Don't Run, Lullaby of the Leaves.

If this is what live surf sounded like in 1963, I want to hear more!

Oh man, I gotta hear this. Is Eddie & TS 42 minutes into part 1 or 2?

Whoa, can't wait to hear all this.

-Damon.

Absolutely amazing....

Eddie and the Showmen introduced starting at about 42:58 on Part One

That was crazy good, even though it was rushed. Funny thing though is that I think out of all the bands, the Surfaris sounded the best and the tightest. I got to thinking about how it would have been to be there and hear Wipeout back then. It wouldn't have been cliche, that's for sure!

This is a truly awesome find! Thanks for sharing, Chris!
This is like a surf masterclass!
I love how The Showmen stay up there and back several of the following singers.

Insect Surfers
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Scimitars
Lords Of Atlantis
Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

I was at that show with my YMCA group! Can't wait to watch it. Mahalo, Chris!!

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

That is insanely cool!!
Thanks for posting!!

WOW!!! Just listened to E&TS and Duane Eddy, and now listening to the Challengers. Incredible stuff!

A few comments:

These must be special mixes for Jake - the saxes overpower all else! Smile Along those lines, I was really surprised how little sax work there was on the the Showmen songs.

Eddie definitely was sporting a very distinctive Jag tone. Their set was a bit rough, but the energy was off the hook! Loved it.

Duane Eddy's tone was pretty thin, don't you think? I'm sure it had to do with the micing, though. Given that Duane is thee major influence on Eddie, Eddie must have been so thrilled to play this show with him!

The Challengers' Speedy Gonzales sounds awful! Did they really joke about an orgy in front of an all-teen audience? Wow. The swinging sixties were definitely underway....

Looking forward to hearing the Surfaris!

Thanks so much for this link, Chris!!!

Oh, this is the same recording of the Surfaris and the Beach Boys that was posted last week! I just made the connection. This is the entire show. Very cool, the Surfaris sound fantastic, especially Point Panic, but Wipe Out is great, too. (Another one for Jake!)

Wow, how badly off-key were Jan & Dean? Ron Wilson sang a lot better on Surfer Joe than those guys did on their own stuff. Very surprising. Though, they probably couldn't hear themselves very well, I'd venture to guess.....

Anyway, this is truly historic.

here's some more photos from that day - I copied all these from facebook and posts to Randy Nauert - I hope he doesn't mind.

The Beach Boys - Notice Al Jardine's Gibson SG?

Brett Brady had no idea that Al Jardine borrowed his guitar that day until recently. I always thought it was so cool that the two bands shared gear, but Brett didn't remember that Al borrowed it, or loaning it out. maybe Al Jardine just grabbed it without asking?

Al always seemed to be turned down so low in the mix I'm not sure anyone would notice what he was playing.

If I remember correctly, this was the first show without David Marks and the first one Al played with them. That may be why he was low in the mix.

Awesome! A post so hot, I got a tweet about it Rock

Listening Now, thanks for posting Chris.

Thanks for posting this, Chris! Killer, killer stuff.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Art Linkletter said "we have a big show, some bands are only going to play 1 number so there's time for the football game" or something to that effect. Football game? screw the football game.
