I have found my favorite reverb in a pedal! I've used them all and this one was the sound I had in my head. I can't comment on whether or not it's suitable to replace or compete with a tank because that wasn't my goal, but after buying most all the other units out there, I prefer this one. FWIW!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. I always enjoy and crave and good search, but it's nice to find something too. My pedal reverb "quest" started years ago when I quit using an old Boss ME-6 multi-effect and realized how much I liked the reverb in it, so I figured surely one of the Boss reverb pedals would have that sound. NOPE! Neither did any other manufacturer's until the '63 came along and there it was!I think the trick is that it has ONE basic reverb sound that you can make louder, longer and/or brighter instead a bunch of different reverbs none of which really worked for my purposes in the first place. |

Hello! This is my first post but I've been lurking here for a while. I just picked one of these up and it reacts remarkably well. I went searching for one after seeing Kill Baby Kill a little back, I believe Noah lurks around here as well. It obviously won't ever sound just like a tank, but for touring purposes it's a more than a great solution for sure. —I'm not a surf guitarist, but I play one on tv. |

It's been well established that tank users prefer tanks, but that doesn't mean FRV users can't be happy. It's better than most other reverb options out there. Let's not rain on Johnny's parade. The FRV-1 is pretty solid. When you compare with a tank back to back, yeah, the tank wins, but you could probably be fooled in a live show by the FRV-1. It's the best digital reverb pedal for surf by far, IMO. Now if they'd just copy Amplitube Fender's reverb module in a pedal... — |

Thanks for all the comments! I tried to make it clear I had no intention of comparing pedals to tanks. I just had something good to say about a pedal so I did. For the record, I have owned a tank before (a Premier, not Fender)and liked it, but I've never felt the need to replace it.I spent a few days in a recording studio just last month using the studio's DRRI that I really liked, (amp and reverb) but it didn't cause me to rush out and buy one of those either. That amp/reverb just worked for what was needed at the time.I usually use British amps without built-in reverb and my comment about the FRV was after using it with a Les Paul and a Vox amp.I do own a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe as well and when the amp I'm using has spring reverb, I typically blend that with some outboard digital and it sounds pretty cool - hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. I've never been a purist about anything - gear, genre, style can all be bent to suit my deviant needs. Ha! Obviously, I love surf music or I wouldn't be here, but's it's only one of many influences. |

The FACT of the matter is that Surf cannot be played with anything but a genuine outboard, tube driven reverb tank, through a tube amp on a top end, single coil pickup guitar. Enough with these threads touting the merrits of modern and affordable technology. Unless you have 2000-3000 dollars to spend on a rig, just give up. ;) —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal.
