Again, in my experience, getting a classic jag sound out of a 50th anniversary - "hotter" pickups and modified bridge geometry be damned - was not at all difficult. It's not as though it's an entirely different guitar: the difference in sound between that and the AVRI was no greater than the difference between any two jags of different vintage or with different setups. YMMV, but you should definitely give it a try if you like the colors and the neck. With good use of the volume and tone controls and the right amp, you'll be surfing in no time!
PS: Surf green XK-E? I'm in!

Oh, and if you're really sold on the vintage bridge design and want a custom color, Dave's still had some thin skins as of last weekend...

This is so cool! two days ago I had a 60 Custom in their shopping cart and when I saw that I could only use PayPal I thought I would call and see what if any options were available. Later I decided to post this thread and get your opinions. Today I think I'm going to follow my teenage dream, an go with an Olympic White AVRI. When I was a kid growing up during the Surf music era I played in a surf band and could never afford a Jag. I remember going to the hot surf bands dances and admiring those guys on stage in their suits playing an Olympic White Jaguar.
I gotta do this. I'll kick myself if i don't! what say you?

Okay. If you've wanted one since you were a kid, you'll never be satisfied until you have one. After that, you'll be on your own. But remember, the Beach Boys could have picked any guitars to go on tour with this year, and they picked Jags. A 50th Anniversary (?) and a Johnny Marr. That's gotta be worth something!

I think Fender is sponsoring some part this tour, or at least is providing the gear gratis. Those are the only reasons I can think of for the two newest Jag models and the Fender hat that is frequently being worn.

They could have used other Fenders. Matching White Strats, for example. Fender sure are smart about whom to promote.

Point is, we've all tried repeated to avoid buying what we've always wanted. we waste lots of money avoiding the inevitable and then do it anyway. Better just to get it over with. If it works out, great. If not, lesson learned and no more regrets and second guesses.

I played a 50th Jag at NAMM and was impressed. I harrassed the guy in the Fender both when he couldnt play surf music so he handed it to me. Holy crap you should have seen the reaction in the crowd when I played Pipeline . it was cool. i was forunate enough to hear first hand what it sounded like and how it played. I was all set on buying one. when guitar center got one and i played it I wasn't as impressed. you guys on here have really helped me figure this all out. Wildwest Guitars in Riverside has one in stock and i'm going to go play it. then i should be able t o. make my decision.

This is what a Hallmark sounds like playing heavy surf/instro. I just heard all these guitars live (Strats, Jags, JMs, Hallmarks, even Galaxie 4s) played essentially back-to-back, and though they each sounded different, played well and through the same amps, there was little for me as a listener to choose between them. I liked the sounds of them all, equally. IMHO, YMMV.
Noel, those recordings sound CLOSE to the Hallmark/Mosrite tone, but they were actually done with an Eastwood Sidejack. I was still about a month away from my Hallmark purchase at the time we recorded that EP.

I guess this just proves the point then. A WELL-played guitar will get the job done. And, now you've got me curious how the same material would sound played using a Hallmark II. Betcha it would still sound just surfy as can be.

Comparing these two guitars is like Apples/Oranges. They are just two entirely different beasts. Both have amazing tone and playability, but the TONE is where the difference is.
Hallmarks have very hot pickups and growl with a natural overdrive. If you are looking for crystal clean tone, it can be done, but it requires adjustments.
If you like that Ventures Live 65 or Man or Astro-man? tone then the Hallmark might be the perfect guitar for you. If you are really wanting a more traditional surf tone, I would suggest the other.

My Hallmark Swept-Wing Custom (set neck, long scale) was one of the finest guitars I have ever played. My two cents.

With all due respect to Ruhar and the mighty Slacktone, the epitome of unadulterated Jaguar tone is to be found here:

Forget Jaguar tone, Jaguar ability is where it is at.
