Roy Orbison was one of the BEST there ever was, in my opinion. Oh yeah, and that's ELVIS on the organ. We may have to resurrect the Elvis Costello thread! I think everyone on that stage is a great musician and it's so sad to think that Roy died not too long after that show...

Absolutely. I was going to get around to learning his guitar part for this, but I guess I'll get to the organ first. I just need someone to play it with. That song is terrific.

Let yourself heal, and you'll be back to it in a flash. I think all the guitar parts were good. James Burton is the master, but then when Roy and Bruce also cut in with solos, it's just AWESOME!

I heard someone say that Bruce spent the concert chasing James's guitar, never caught up, but had a ton of fun trying. This concert is one of my all-time favorites. I was told by a keyboardist the other day that it takes a long time and a LOT of PT to maximize the benefit of this surgery. Then we do my right shoulder.
I'm going to play guitar as soon as I can, but there's no down side to using the intervening time learning to sight-read music and play keys. When I've finally learned some theory, harmony and composition too, I'll have a real chance to be a musician. It's just going to be tough to put everything away this week.

Elvis Costello is the BEST there ever was! The only Elvis that ever matters.
And by the BEST, I mean top 10 for me! I love that man. One of the few aging stars that isn't a joke, in my opinion.

Okay. That's not gonna happen here any time soon. Looks like she was having fun though.

Well, my pre-op is tomorrow morning. Blood test and ECG.
I caught a nasty cold a few days ago and will also find out if the surgery stays on Thursday or gets put off two weeks. Two weeks is bad. I figure I can be in shape to drive to NC in 2 months for the Instro Summit, sling and all, or at least ride along. I'm not so sure about making the trip in just 6 weeks. I'd rather put off the surgery until after I get back; a bad shoulder isn't life-threatening or anything.
I'm not really looking forward to the post-op. That shoulder will initially (okay, for a long time) feel like something cut up and screwed back together by Victor Frankenstein. But I am looking forward to getting back full use of my left arm. I just don't want to miss the Summit.
I'll post an update tomorrow afternoon.

Well, there's no problem with my cold pushing off my surgery for Thursday. So I got a crew cut on the way home to give one less thing to bother with as I recover. I'll spend today and tomorrow getting ready.
I really appreciate everyone's encouragement and best wishes.

Noel - Here's wishing you a smooth procedure and speedy recovery. Ask your PT if this will help get you back on the guitar faster.

Thanks Frank. I already have one but can't use it until the shoulder muscles are ready.

It's not surf but my favorite organ piece in a song is The Carny by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. It's also probably the only thing calliope music has ever given to rock and roll, ever.

Maybe this post needs to be its own topic. What do you think?
So I mentioned above that my shoulder will initially feel like something that Victor Frankenstein cut up and screwed together. Then it occured to me that the monster wasn't given a pain block. Can you imagine what he felt like?
So, horror surf bands, is there a tune in that idea? What would it take to represent in surf horror music what Frankenstein's monster feels as he awakes and the pain sears and explodes through every cubic inch of his piece-part sewn and bolted-together body? Is this concept way beyond the genre? Is there any way to do this that stays on the surf side and doesn't go all death metal borror whatever?

Do you mean pain as a serious subject or do you mean pain portrayed in an unrealistic way, like in a horror film.
Surf music is incapable of dealing with a serious subject.

Great question that gets to the heart of my question. Surf music, even horror, is all about enjoying the experience. It's like the difference between watching Body of Evidence and watching a real autopsy. The first is fun, the second isn't.

To expand, I love '60s Hammer horror films. The Wrong Turn and Saw series not at all. So, think think Frankenstein from the monsters perspective with Vincent Price as the monster.
Like I said, the idea of portraying what the monster feels may be out of reach for surf.
