Them's fightin' words tough-guy!!! Fight Stir the Pot Wink
(I'll let you get away with Aerosmith, and assume you
haven't heard Clapton in Cream, Derek & the Dominoes
or John Mayall's Bluesbrakers, but the Allman Brothers:
IMHO were, and still are as good as any band that's ever
existed in any genre. Link Wray was a pioneer, and great
until the end).

Bob

===>I'll grant you that Link Wray was a pioneer, but I still
think he's overrated. Call me a square (and I KNOW I'm gonna
get blasted for the following statement), but I much prefer
Duane Eddy to Link Wray. . . . Cool

Sorry, can't agree with you on ANY of Clapton's incarnations:
Cream, Derek & the Dominoes. . . blech! Clapton, admittedly,
had a few interesting tunes in his day, but, like Yes and
Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, 95% of his output was self-indulgent
tripe. (I WOULD have added Yes and ELP to my "overrated"
lists, but who actually listens to them anymore???)

Hey, you know I'm primarily a piano/synth player, and all the
keyboardists out there talk about what a great pioneer Keith
Emerson was. But you know, I absolutely detest his music, and. . .
hell, I just can't find the words to describe how absolutely banal
his so-called music really is! Oh wait! -- Puke

I DO like "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman Brothers (and, after
watching The Devil's Rejects, I must say that I now have a new
appreciation for "Midnight Hour"(?)), but I still think they suck.

Sorry--I listened to far too many Dead Kennedys albums in
my youth, so I am forever jaded. Very Happy

Speaking of punk, any Cramps fans out there??? I KNOW they
are HUGE fans of Link Wray. I LOVE the Cramps' tune, "Sunglasses
After Dark," which takes one of Wray's instros ("Fatback," perhaps?)
and fuses the lyrics to "Sunglasses After Dark" on top of it.
Goo goo muck indeed!

Up the Irons!!!

Will you play Casbah for me this time with your extended drum solo?

I know I`ll get smack downs for this, but Mr. Moto.... way overated. Never really liked the Belairs that much anyway..Bustin surfboards is right up there with it.

Someone had better make a distinction between the Allman Brothers with Duane and without. The Live at the Fillmore, although too long, is a landmark in rock music history. What unbelievable solos--and I hate long solos. Duane was also half of Derek and the Dominoes!

I just don't know what to say to anyone who doesn't love Mr. Moto and Surf Rider. You say you like surf music?

Is there one song that everyone loves?
I'll put it out there that Dick Dale's (and only his) Miserlou is the best surf song--ever. I'm not a huge DD fan but I don't think anyone ever made a more aggressive and thrilling sound.

I just never cared for The Belairs. I like covers of Mr.Moto, just dont care for the original. Im not a fan of Lets go tripping either, at least not Dicks original recording of it. I like when he added reverb to it later in recordings. On another note, I do like Paul Johnson`s later, and more current stuff. What can I say?

Agreed!

i don't like walk, dont run. its not even a surf tune!
and as i said before, the chantays version of pipeline isnt that great. anyone else think the ventures, not even being a surf band, did a better job?

I find this type of response quite puzzling. You asked a question soliciting opinions and I stated mine. Surprise! It doesn't match yours. If you didn't want to know you shouldn't have asked. Or did you only want to know if people agreed with you?

Of course there is no accounting for tastes, so let me elaborate on why I feel that the Chantay's version is superior to the Ventures version. I feel that the original has a certain vibe to it that is unmatched by any cover, even a cover as well done as the Ventures'. Also, there is the "first" factor; it is one of the genre defining landmark songs. That song put together a lot of the elements that we take for granted now all in one song. The songwriting on that one is amazing. Maybe it is overplayed now, but think about the first time you heard it. For me, it was like nothing else I had ever heard. Think about how that must have been like in 1963. Paul Johnson told the story on Cowabunga of when he first heard Pipeline, he was in his car and he had to pull off the road to put all his attention on the song.

The Ventures cover is very well done, and I like it a lot. But I feel the vibe created by a bunch of teenagers, in this case, trumps the musicianship of the seasoned adult professional musicians.

Anyway, of course, just in case it is not clear, this is just my opinion. No need to reply stating that.

i was stating that i was entitled to my own opinion because i like the Venture's version better, that is all.

I'm with Brian on that, although I like the Astronauts version, too (but not as much as the Chantays).
BTW, after bad-mouthing Bustin' Surfboards, what do I find myself "singing" to my daughter while changing her yesterday? That's right, Bustin' Surfboards...

The Scimitars

I Just heard the Ventures Version of Pipeline in a movie today.
Its not bad, but just doesn't capture that vibe of surfing( to me).
Its well played, but just seems kinda stiff, and very (Studio=stale)
There are some killer original songs of surf from the 60s that may not be 100% perfect recrodings, or performances, but some how with the limited Rec. equip. and primitive( i.e. not Fenders with Showmans)
they nailed that perfect surf vibe. Pipeline by the chantays is a perfect example of it. Yes its overplayed. And its not a hard song to play.
But when I hear it on AM or the rare FM radio show, I get goosebumps.

Brian, cool recolection of Pauls story, I'l have to bring that up with him next time I see him.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Jeff(bigtikidude)

i agree with you jeff. and being someone who surfs a lot and has been surfing a very long time, hearing 'pipeline' always makes me think of surfing as does 'stoked' by the beach boys. those tunes 'feel' like surfing.
my 2 cents.

i LOVE stoked, that song is way UNDERrated

The Tremblors on Facebook!

The Tremblors on MySpace!

For me it is "Miserlou". Why? Well, I have heard Dick Dale's version about a million times so that's not fun anymore. And like "Pipeline", it is almost a cliche, so we don't really ever play it. Modern covers of it seem generally weak. Shame, really, because it is a good song. Maybe it is a case of over-saturation rather than it over-rating.

SSIV

Here are the Surfaris doing Wipeout. For a song that over rated, they crowd sure seems to like it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEvXuHKg1TE&mode=related&search=
