As I threatened, I'm learning Rumble by Link Wray. For now I'll skip how he ends this with that maniacal run, but starting at 1:25 in, and then again at 2:03, he does something up at or past the 12'th fret that I can't figure out. I can't identify the chord(s) he's using and nothing I've tried sounds the same.
I'd seriously appreciate it if someone can help me with this. Thanks.
And, if anyone's wondering, my Strats recently reset original Vintage six-screw trem is getting a serious workout having to do something that seems at the edge of its design capabilities. Great fun!

The solo? finger an open f (like you would play on the first fret) but on the 12th fret..slide it up 1/2 a step to the 12th

That chord is just an E major on the 12th fret played hitting wildy the 2nd, 3rd and sometimes the 4rd string (at least, thats the way I play it and it sounds OK)

It's awesome, thanks for sharing.
IMO, what makes it so big and solid is due to the bass
part.
I'll really have to dig that one.
Amazing what a great bass player can do. Playing this alone, I use all the reverb I have and a delay that splits the two Dsus2 chords in half and repeats about five times as it fades away. I tried it with a trem pedal but it just interfered with the whammy. I can do it without the whammy bar and use the trem and delay pedals but it isn't as raucous. Is it unusual to bend a whammy bar doing this tune? The one on my guitar doesn't look right any more.
My goal is to be ready for the next time I'm somewhere anyone can join a jam of it.

Bash that guitar down !
And I forgot to mention loud. Very loud, with lots of attack. I don't think this tune benefits from the delicate finesse of Sleepwalk. And reverb, lots of reverb.

the two Dsus2 chords
Dsus2? in Rumble? Please explain.
The only chords I know of in Rumble are D, E, A and B7 and the aforementioned E on the 12th fret.

I would call that a D9 or a Dadd9. Even though E is the second note in the D major scale, I was always taught that if the added note is more than an octave above the root it's referred to as a 9th.
Never mind. I'm gonna keep using normal D. Too late to stop now, I like how it sounds that way.

According the MusicNotes Website, which sells licensed copies of original copyrighted sheet music, it's Dsus2. Here's a link to the first page. I never could have figured that out on my own.
http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtd.asp?ppn=MN0051407&
I'd not have known this otherwise. I've found original sheet music for lots of surf tunes at this Website. Searching musicnotes.com is sort of surf music archaeology.
What promted all this is Link (in this clip) doesn't seem to play the 12'th fret chords the way he originally wrote it. It's scored 11/12 11/12 12/13 on E-B-G, but it doesn't look or sound like what he's playing.

My chord theory is rusty, but I think it's a Dsus2 because there is no 3rd. On "sus" chords you replace the 3rd with some other note. Here, Link only plays the root (1), 5th (A), and 2nd (E).
On an "add" chord, you play notes in addition to 1, 3, and 5. So an "add9" would be 1, 3, 5, 9. A plain old "9" chord is where you play 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 (the 7 is implied).
Dansm's Guitar Chord Theory is a really helpful site for sorting all this out.

Really? I used to play it as a D also, but once I got turned on to the Dsus2 (thanks to WR) it sounded so much better to my ears (closer to the record).

Somewhere Link is smiling that people are debating whether he played a Dsus2 or a Dadd9 with an implied 7th. I think he just ler 'er rip!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Ha. I don't think we are debating the chord, just what to call it! And do you think Link knew what it was called when he played it? Hell no, he played it because it sounded awesome, and he was awesome.

Okay. So then who wrote down the annotated sheet music that I linked to earlier? Would that be Milton Grant? Who is Milton Grant? Searching out that answer led me to this. The embedded video includes Rumble and Baby, What You Want Me To Do?
