Hard songs are - well - hard songs. But hard songs can also be relative to the one listening to them or wishing to learn - depending on ability, motivation, desire to play them etc. There's some great examples above that I'm gonna have to check out more of.

I think in the surf(esque) world, Alex Anthony Faide from Los Twang! Marvels is the absolute technical master. This tune is is a good gauge on where your alternate picking technique is:

Wow man you guys sound really good. Los Cartablanca? After the beer? It's good to hear a young Surf band. I look forward to some more stuff from you guys. I like "Bandidos En El Pueblo" ta chida esa cancion. Cool

The Deadbeats

Just about anything by Dave Bridge. He's an Australian player and very technical (and talented). He was very popular in the 1960's and as far as I know is still alive and playing. The Dave Bridge Trio records are becoming rare but well worth a look-in. A bit is around on YouTube.

Link Wray's Rumble is damn hard to play right. Many bands have covered it, but there's a certain attitude/feel in that song that's not easy to capture. Link's attack, where he plays in relation to the beat, the devil-may-care right hand. It may seem simple, but to get it sounding right, it takes a lot of work. Don't even get me started on the bass line.

The Deadbeats

The Ventures "Kickstand" (Bonus track from the 'Guitar Freakout/Wild Things' album) Is as technically demanding as anything you'll see, both for the lead and the drums. I've seen bands that have been playing this for years that still don't get it right. I gave up on it a while back.

That is some very slick playing!

The Baronics make Mozart's Turkish Rondo (in surf style) look and sound easy--BUT!!!--it is tough to play. At least it is tough to play as well as they do and as quickly. The hard part is in the middle, with silky cascades of single notes that are played so clearly they seem to be much slower than they actually are. Hats off to Les Baronics!

This is also appears as "NIGHT STICK" on Ventures A Go Go. Virtually the same song also appears as "GO GO DANCER" on the same disc. The lead is easy with a particular fingering I found. Take the E bar chord at the 7th fret. Then instead of the bar hold down the three strings on the 9th fret with your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers. Place your 1st finger at the 7th fret on the G string. The lead is played from the four notes held by these four fingers. Practice picking up your 3rd finger to sound the note you are holding with your first finger.

Rev,
I LOVE that you chimed in with a seemingly "simple" song.
It's been proven time and time again that what appears to be simple or easy is usually the most difficult.
Yeah, to most it's basically just 3 chords, but woowa-weewa, it's sooooo much more!!!! I've rarely heard anyone play this well live, and you are especially right-on with that bass line!!! Sounds soooo simple, yet hardly anyone gets it like it is on the original recording.
The ubiquitous Jack The Ripper is the same thing....how many times have you heard guitarists come in at the wrong place and the whole thing turns into a different song?
And, you mentioned FEEL! Yes, yes, yes!!!
The notes might be 100% correct, but if there's no energy, emotion or feel, what's the point?
Again, how many times have we all heard the same old standards completely destroyed by old guys in bad Hawaiian shirts (which, by the way, from now on, I'm referring to as OGIBHS), because of a complete lack of emotional connection.
All flash and no depth makes for an extremely miserable musical experience, IMHO.
