Jump on it, Whorehay! You've got Jeff's endorsement!
Although, the lyrics need some work. I still think it
should just be you yelling "I Hate Miki Dora" over and
over kinda like Surfin' Bird. Big Grin

Only if I can sing it with the Finksville 5, Norm! Rock

With apologies to Ray Davies...

I am a dull and simple lad
Cannot tell point breaks from beach breaks
And I have never met da Cat
And I wish I could surf like that -
I wish I could be like Miki D

And when I lie on my pillow at night
I dream I can surf like Miki D
And lead my surf team to victory
When I'm not shoving guys off surfboards

He is the head boy at the beach
He is the captain of the surf
His is so gay and fancy free
And I wish I could surf like that
I wish I could be like Miki D

And all the girls down at Malibu
Try to go out with Miki D
The try their best but can't succeed
For he is of pure and noble breed

Not bad, Whorehay. Good choice of role models, too.

This picture is so great! Answers the gear question, too!

Who played sax?

This thread is best when it is about the Pharos...

Tony sent me another photo from the same gig:

Rereading and loving this thread. I think we are still wondering about the basis of the band's name and who played sax.

I was re-reading this thread while searching for Pharos data... one of the Zappa archive sites claims that The Rhythm Surfers - Daytone D-6301 ["502" (Like Getting Pinched On A 502) c/w Big City Surfer] 1963 was actually The Pharos... there are enough similarities for it to be true... La Puente is adjacent to West Covina, which has been cited as home base for The Rhythm Surfers, The Spectrums, and the Hydraulic Raisins. What's the real scoop?

I just found this site and might be able to add some information. I am Greg Tangonan, the drummer in the original Pharos. Those are really old pics, I hadn't seen in a long time. Nor had I heard the two cuts Pintor and Rhythm Surfer for a long time. Surprised to see it on YouTube and on Miki Dora's video. Cesar Aliviado was from Mactan, Cebu, Philippines and finished high school at La Puente High School. Same with Bill Bontempe. I was a high school junior at the time at Pa Puente High School. Yes, that is all the drum set we had.
I am retired in the Philippines now.

Thanks for posting Greg,
Do you still have contact with those guys?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Wow Greg! Thanks for stopping by!

Did you play on Pintor? Do you remember anything about the writing or recording of that song? For many people (myself included) it is a very special song.

It's probably a special thing about the Pharos mainly because that's pretty much all there is. I bet if there was more it would be special, too.

Great thread! Pintor is one of the greatest surf songs off all time IMO.

Thanks for bring this thread up Danny. La Puente High School is my alma mater. It was packed to the gills with students.
I don't remember the guys but the band name is familiar.
There were lots of surf bands formed at that school. None made it big time that I recall. Or lasted beyond graduation.

I had missed this! It's a shame neither of those guys came back to answer the follow-up questions. I had no idea this was based on a traditional tune.

Someone contacted me and asked for Pharos photos and I searched and found this thread. Unfortunately the photos I had posted earlier were lost when Dropbox stopped allowing public links. So... I dug them up and will post them here. Enjoy!
