The Trashmen played about half instros and half vocals. The same can be said about the Surfaris and Dick Dale for that matter. And The Astronauts were primarily a Frat Rock vocal band that interestingly is mostly loved for their surf stuff. That's why I like 'em,'natch!

This is where the line for this topic can't be so easily defined. It's apparent if you played a surf stomp in the sixties you did instros and vocals. Some bands less vocals, some more. And yes, I too dig those Dick Dale Surf and Hot Rod tunes!

Man or Astroman?.... It's got to be a tie between 9 Volt and U-RANUS

Television Man, Psychology of A.I., Within One Universe There Are Millions.

+1 for MOAM vocal tunes, My favorite MOAM vocal tune is a toss up between U-Uranus or Max Q

Yeah, I know. I just picked out the Trashmen because they probably did a little less instro/vocal ratio than the Surfaris, Astronauts etc. Plus, they we're most well known for a vocal song.
Although, Surfin' Bird could almost be considerd an instro, there's only a few words in there. Laughing

That's sort of what I was getting at. Since virtually all surf bands in the sixties did vocals, it makes it sometimes difficult to put them into only one category. It seems that what they're most remembered for is what defines them.

MOAM vocals are the absolute worst or i should say what ive heard which is "manta ray". Im assuming that song is a joke of some sort but it's just too much for me. It brings to mind my favorite monomen album.

"Manta Ray" is a crappy cover of a throwaway Pixies song. The only vocals of MoAM's that I like are "9 Volt" and "Mermaid Love," both of which are infinitely better.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Ok thats good to hear. Hearing such a great band do such a horrible song can be deeply disturbing.

I was going to come up with a list, but to be honest, I agree with all of the songs listed here so far (although I go back n' forth on "Surfer Joe"). I'd add pretty much any Untamed Youth vocal to the list.

What's interesting to me is the comments I get whenever I release a CD on Double Crown that has one or more vocals. There are quite a few people out there that won't buy our discs if it has a few vocals (no matter how killer the instros are). Obviously I don't expect everyone to buy every single one of our releases, but for me, I can't see not buying something just because there's singing on a few songs.

I personally like vocal and instro songs, so while we will predominantly release instro discs, there will be vocals here and there.

I was just listening to The Centurians Bullwinkle Pt.II this morning, and that comes on and perplexes my wife.

Wife: Did he just say "Thiiiiiir-sty"?
Me: No, "Church Key".
Wife: Who's "Churchski"?

Am I out of line for suggesting Eddie Angel's "Mumbling Beatnik"?

No. Not at all.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned any of the ventures vocal numbers-

I'm thinking The Twomp, Hot Pastrami, Hey There Sunshine, I Feel so fine.

I really like Twist me Pretty Baby by Bert Weedon, I think it is the closest thing to a vocal number that he ever recorded.

Some of the Atlantics stuff that they did mid-sixties were pretty good, and I also like some of the bomboras vocal numbers like She'll do Ya Wrong, Ilean, Take A Chance,

I also like the Los Straitjackets/Kaiser George stuff.

Okay, I know this is favorite vocal by an instro band thread but I thought I'd throw in some surf/hot rod vocals that I'm obsessed with just because they rule!!

Red Hot Roadster - The Rip Chords
Let's go to the Beach - Larry and The Loafers

King of the Surf by The Trashmen.

I had a cool day recently because I heard that on the muzak while I was in Walgreens.

The Muzak station that Walgreen's has is killer. I've heard all sorts of obscure vintage rock stuff that you never get on oldies stations
