Permalink Anyone use Fruity Loops?

New Topic

I've had Fruity Loops, a drum loop program, installed on my computer at home for awhile now. I've used it to program some really basic drum beats to jam along to, but it seems like most of the presets are much more techno oriented. Any of you guys use the program? Any suggestions or loops to share?

The Disasternauts

I have Fruity Loops on my machine, and I agree 100% with your assessment: basically useful in the techno/electronica world...but, not too useful if your going for "real" drums.

I don't use the FruityLoops for any surf-like drums: instead, I rely on good old Boss Dr Rhythm DR-550:

I have a fairly new myspace page with two songs, one of which (Gill Man's Revenge) was recorded (badly) using Fruity Loops.

The song itself sounds awful: it's too quiet, not all the tracks are present, etc. You can hear the drum loop, though.

My friend, who has the program, is into electronic music, and I agree about what you both said. It is better for stuff like that.

There is an item in FL studio you might want to try.
It's the Piano Roll. Along with it you can use the Plung-in Sampler Player "FPC"

http://www.flstudio.com/help/html/plugins/FPC.htm

From FL Studio:
FPC is a self-contained drum machine which makes it easy to create, edit and swap drumkits on the fly to tune the sound of the drumloops in your project. FPC supports 16 multi-layered patches per drumkit bank.

I use to use FL alot for drum programming and with the piano roll you can place the hits and adjust their velocity not volume. (more real)

I always like to place the cymbal hit just behind the kit hit. It makes it sound like a real person did it.

Another is to place ghost hits on the snare and kick example: snare count (1, du-POP, a , POP) You can sing this phase and hear the ghost hit (du) and (1 & a) are kicks with "a" falling just after "3 and". So it goes (1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4 and a) You Kick 1. snare ghost on "a" Snare Hit on 2. wait until "a" after "3" to kick again then snare hit on 4.

I posted this link once in another thread but I think this will give you a good example of what a piano roll can do. Listen closely to the Kick and Snare and you hear the ghost shot. without them it would really sond like a machine.

You should check out: http://stevesspringysurfdrums.com

There's all sorts of surf drum loops there, as well as backing tracks.

Holy nearly 9 year thread bump, batman.

Yeah. And I still use Fruity Loops as Metronome!

The Hicadoolas

I used to use it in my electronic band -Sonic Messiah.

I know I'm late to this but...yes I use Fruity Loops often! The key is to add your own sounds. I use it for drum programming when I don't have a drummer around. Use good acoustic drum sounds, program them to feel real. A drummer will always be better but you can get some great results that will fool a lot of people. There's loads of plugins that beef up the sound as well. It's a great sequencer and you can add a lot of ambient sounds. But mainly, I use it for drums, make my own loops.
Any questions, feel free to ask.

I've been recently using LMMS, an Open Source FL Studio inspired DAW. I can see the possibilities of "good acoustic drum sounds, program them to feel real" if that is what you were after. Nothing beats a real drummer of course but a good beat from an acoustic sample or VSTi can still sound punchy if done well.
