Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but:

That conjunction of ideas makes me think of the Baronics' Get Bach CD. All surf, all oldies (really old oldies), and not a standard in the bunch. I bet it was a lot of work arranging it all! (What ever happened to those guys?)

I'd love to hear that.

Slightly expensive, but not as bad as $160-something for a used CD through Amazon. Actually, I'm not sure if it's even expensive. I'm not good at translating from the Canadian$ these days.

Wait, I'm an idiot, Get Bach is sold out. However, ...

I had no idea they had redone Exposition. I think nothing came out in 2007, however, so though this is dated 2009, it may not be good. Anyone know anything more.

These guys were terrific on the classical adaptations in Get Bach, and I've always liked the more recent covers in Exposition well, too. There's even a little saxophone if I recall, though not much. The pop stuff sounds like the Ventures, and their Pintor and Bullwinkle Part II are very smooth and second wave traditional. Sort of Outerwave from Quebec. How do you say Outerwave in French? The best I can come up with is Outreonde, which looks more like it might mean "strange hound."

They were a very unique band. I loved their take on the classics.

Before I had kids, I would spend a blissful week each summer on an organized bike tour here in Quebec. In the early years, the tour had two musical acts per day: a bigger act in the evening on a stage, and a lower-key act in the bistro tent in the afternoon. In '96, having completed my day's ride and was strolling about the 'village du Grand Tour' in the company of a charming female acquaintance, we chanced upon a group playing one of my favourite kinds of music in the bistro area. They wore glasses, striped shirts and playing classical music, surf-style. We enjoyed the whole set and I remember them playing a couple of tunes twice. Such was my discovery of the Baronics.

Being the go-getter that I am, it took a while, perhaps a year or two, before I connected the band that I saw with their name and started asking for it in the record shops. I remember asking for it and being told 'no, that's no longer available.'

Skip forward several years (remember, I'm a go-getter) and my discovery of SG101 around the spring of '08. The Baronics came up in a couple of threads and I finally decided to search for them online and found the link above. I duly filled out the blanks and ordered all three albums.

After a couple of weeks, I received a call from Olivier, who was the bass player, and he apologized for taking so long to ship out the discs. He was in the middle of moving and things were not as organized as they could be. He mentioned that there were about five copies of Get Bach left and that it should probably be reprinted. There was some other small talk, and I don't think the band plays together these days.

So that's a long way of saying I have these discs. I like Get Bach best, it's one of my favourite surf records. Every track is a hit. Well, except for Moonlight Sonata:

If I remember correctly, the other two discs are extremely similar and I'll have to check the differences. One is called a remix. The tunes are all played very well but very straight. The Walk Don't Run medley is the same as the Ventures' version. Still, buying the three albums cost about the same as buying two, so I got them all. The two exposition discs may be CD-Rs, I'll have to check.

Hmm, maybe I'll dig out my iPod and give Get Bach a listen.

Wow! You got to see them play! I have the original two CDs. How different is the remix?

I did a lot of those bike tours, and saw a lot of acts. Although I wasn't particularly paying attention to surf in those days, it was something I liked a lot and the memory, while admittedly vague, is a lot stronger than almost all of the other bands I saw.

I'll do an A/B of the Exposition and the Remix when I get a few moments to compare them and post a little review.

RK

P.S. My iPod's out of juice (rats!), so that'll help me remember when I'm home.

RK

Right, so I finally got a good listen in to differentiate the Remix from the original. Apart from a difference of one or two tracks, I really had to put headphones on to hear a difference.

Exposition has a couple of tracks that begin with ambient live sounds, and these have been trimmed off. The tracks have otherwise been remixed to sound a little brighter and clearer. The new album sounds a bit louder, I wonder if they've goosed the loudness as per that other thread.

As I said, I had to put on headphones to really hear the difference, flipping between two corresponding tracks. I think I prefer the remix, but I'd have to be some kind of completist collector to need the remix if I already had the original.

Thanks, RK! That was above and beyond!

The Baronics are on YouTube. Here is their version of Mozart's Turkish March. I found the sheet music and learned it, finding that nearly all of what the Baronics played is note-for-note as Mozart wrote it. OF course they added whammy and vibe, and lots of it. There's also a video of their playing Vivaldi's "Spring."

Too bad there was no video of Vivaldi's "Summer" which is my favorite surf piece of all time. Not only is its arrangement smashingly brilliant but it is the only surf-feel piece I can think of in waltz time.

Not part of their Classical gas, but I like it.

Vivaldi's Spring plus Misirlou, woohoo, as mentioned by Squid!

Les Baronies is very good band and i like their band.I Like to listen their song.I regularly hear their songs.I forget everything when I hear their song in the headphones.

(Re)Inspired by this testimonial I am going to listen to them now!

I don't think I've mentioned it, but I'm pretty sure this is one of the CDs I got from Ferenc when he was in the CD business.
