Looked for a thread on this & didn't see one. I figure if people post their faves, some of us will get turned onto something new. With that said, here's my faves in the order I think of them:
Salem's Lot (TV version)--scariest thing I've EVER seen on TV.

Nosferatu (original)--still creepy IMO.
The Haunting (original)--gave me nightmares as a kid.

Carrie--that ENDING!
Rosemary's Baby--creepy!
Blair Witch Project--I found that chick annoying as hell, but that ending gave me nightmares for a few nights.

The Exorcist continues to scare the crap out of me.

I think the last couple of things that mildly creeped me out was Ringu and Sixth Sense. Poltergeist and The Shining were the ones that really scared me as a kid, though.

On Saturday night, my son made my wife and me watch
"13 Ghosts" and now he wants me to watch "Drag Me To Hell."
He's very into special effects with makeup and props. You have to see some the stuff he's created. Now that is scary. For 15, my son is VERY creative.
He's very much into the Halloween spirit. he's creating a haunted house walk through in our back yard. Our house is full of very creepy props.

I like this thread! Perfect for Halloween. Here's just a handfull of fright flicks that contain some really good scares...
THE SHINING... Spooky little twin girls, a horrifying hag in a bathtub, and a sea of blood comes pouring out of an elevator! One of the scariest films of all time aside from The Exorcist.
SUSPIRIA... The soundtrack alone will have you on the edge of your seat. A bit of awkward dubbing here and there but the cinematography and scares are top notch.
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (aka THE GATES OF HELL)... A priest hangs himself in a foggy graveyard and it opens the gates of hell. 'Nuff said?
LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE... Arguably the best Haunted House movie ever made. Slow paced but loaded with atmosphere and plenty of chills.
PHANTASM... Before the Slasher genre took hold and ruined Horror films forever, this super imaginative film made in 1979 is a great example of what a low budget horror film can be. Beware the Tall Man!
BEYOND THE DOOR... If you can get past the bad dubbing this Exorcist knockoff has some really great scares in it. Just seeing the movie poster in the theatre as a kid gave me nightmares.

The original Night of the Living Dead gives me the shivers. Something about the way it was shot in B&W gives it almost a documentary feel that draws you into it. The best scares are those that build throughout the movie rather than when some bloodied up rubber corpse jumps out at you.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) gives the same feeling for the same reasons.

Maybe not the best zombie flick (that honor still goes to Romero), but it's definitely a sentimental favorite of mine. I'll add a couple more to my favs list: The Changeling, Creepshow, & The Thing. I saw that recent Trick 'r Treat one last night and liked it, kind of reminiscent of Creepshow.

For me it's gotta be The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ... the original, not any of the sequels and definitely not the atrocious remake.
I have to imagine the writing sessions for that one went something like this:
"Remember how in the original you always hear but never actually see the chainsaw in the build up to the end? Let's have the chainsaw on screen for the entire movie!"
"Dude! And check this out - Leatherface kills people because he had a skin condition!"
"Yeah! Suck it, Charles Foster Kane."

HELL YES.
Goblin were pretty inconsistent, IMO, but their Argento soundtracks are excellent. The special edition Suspiria DVD comes with the soundtrack CD - can't recommend that version enough.

There was a period of about two years where I watched as many films by that director - Takaski Miike - as I could get my hands on. Which turned out to be a lot, since he's averaged five or so a year. Audition's really unrepresentative of his style, but yeah - the first time you see it, you're in for a shock. And the less you know going in, the better.

My favorite horror genre must be the Italian Giallo movies of the late 60's and early 70's. Many of them had great soundtracks (more than a few scored by maestro Ennio Morricone), innovative camera work and stylish sets with great visuals and atmosphere.

Actually, the Swedish film "Let the Right One In", would be my first recommendation for a good recent horror flick. I recently binged on a few French New Wave of Horror, or whatever they're calling it..., Martyrs, Inside, Them, High Tension, Frontier(s), Irreversible. Most of which are viscerally ultra-disgusting with a few scares.
I've got "I Drink Your Blood" (1970) to watch at home tonight or tomorrow... "Some grimy hippies (who happen to be dedicated to devil worship) take over a rat-infested, abandoned farmhouse after their van breaks down. An old man tries to intervene but gets manhandled by the squatters. In retribution, one of the old man's grandkids kills a rabid dog, drains its blood and injects it into a batch of meat pies that he sells to the Satanists. It isn't long before the infection spreads -- zombies ahoy!"
