Here's me playing my '56 Stringmaster T8 with Haole Kats!!! at the amazing Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale last year. Our guitarist, Josh, is playing my URB, and Joe, our drummer, is playing a standup drumkit (snare, cymbals, floor tom - no kick or hi-hat).

image

Not having a kick or HH isn't as big an issue as one might think. We sorta miss it on a few things, but generally, this setup gets the job done, and there's a certain uncluttered sound that works. We all are Jr. Brown fans, and saw him here in St. Petersburg a while back. His drummer played just snare/cymbal. The bass player is pretty much always on the downbeat, and with the right tone, serves as the 'kick' drum. Jr.'s show SMOKED! When we first tried it, Joe hated it. But, as he got used to it, he grew to like it (especially at setup and tear down). Gotta have the floor tom for the jungle drums, though.

Aloha,
Kanekila

man, that's a real nice looking double-bass...from the photo, it looks almost like it has a blonde/light-colored wood fingerboard...

what kind of bass is that? Framus? Kay? Noname?

inquiring minds would like to know...

That's Louie Bellson (a jazzer if you're not familiar with him). I corresponded with him by mail for several years a long time ago. I have a signed pic of Sandy Nelson underneath that Smile

Hey dp -- that's an 1992 Engelhardt M1 (http://www.engelhardtlink.com/) with a rosewood fingerboard and tailpiece. I bought it a few years ago from a guy in Chicago who, as luck would have it, just happened to live about 5 miles from their shop in Elk Grove Village. I contacted Engelhardt, and they sold me a box to ship it in, and help the guy pack it properly for freight shipment. Way cool guys up there. I got it for $700, plus a Hamilton stand, two bows and a really nice padded gig bag! With shipping, under $875!. I ordered the K&K pickup and preamp from Bob Gollihur (http://www.gollihur.com/), who is extremely knowledgable, helpful and nice cat.

I bought a used Azola EUB in March, and we pretty much use it now, due to more powerful and consistent tone, no feedback issues at loud volumes, easier to schlep AND fits in the mini-van with all our PA and other gear.

image

The Azola kind of lies between an URB and electric. It works great for our Hawaiian, swing and jazz, but there's nothing like a real URB, though, for certain tunes. It just has THAT woody, tubby (in the good way) tone an electric doesn't get.

Aloha,
Kanekila

Here I am at the South Bay Surf Stomp (Memorial Day '06) onstage with The Lava Rats and my beautiful baby.

Sorry about the size, but I'm a bit of a technical retard.

Heres me. Joe Tourist. Sorry it has no musical reference though. I scanned this years ago (35, an I'm 45 now so add fat and take away hair) on my sisters pc when she got it. I'm at the foot of a B24 Liberator Bomber at Dayton Air Force Museum. My Dad was a mechanic on them in the 8TH Air Force in England during WW2. He passed when I was 4. I treasure quite a collection of pictures of him in front of B24s with some neato nose art. Along with wrenches and loads of Pratt and Whitney motors.
For music reference I'm also a big Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Andrew Sisters fan lol. Thats where Surf Music really started Wink

My Topps trading card, circa '75, when I dominated the Whirled Cup scene. My sponsers, Amber-Vision, Puma, Tuborg and Spalding all dropped me shortly after the Ankara Airport hashish incident, even though those charges were dropped. I then settled into my Northern Califorinia ranch/studio to record my first record, The Instrumental Hits of ABBA, which went on to sell in the dozens...
