I just received so bad news yesterday. Doug Hensen former bassist of the legendary instrumental surf group Eddie & The Showmen has passed away after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Doug is pictured at the far right of both group photos. It is quite sad that everyone in the group to the right of sax player Bob Knight in the first photo have passed away in recent years. I never did get the chance to interview Doug for my book. May he rest in peace.

Bummer!

Condolences to his family and all that knew him. He's with Eddie now.

CUTBACK

I've long admired the playing of Doug Hensen and that great looking black Jazz bass in all those pictures. His playing on "Scratch" is my favorite bass performance in surf music. Gone but not forgotten...

That whole band was just freaking brilliant. Such great and tight players. Eddie & The Showmen were truly a thing of wonder. I'm glad we have their music today.

And let's not forget the fantastic opening bass riff in "Mr. Rebel" that plays as important of a role in that song as does the guitar part.

So sad that almost the entire classic line up of that amazing band is now gone.

R.I.P. Doug Hensen

Sad indeed. We're losing these guys right and left. Check out the bass part for "Dark Eyes". I had to attempt this when we were doing the E&TS benefit and tribute shows for Eddie and Dick Dodd. Usual caveat being that we're never certain exactly who was on these early recordings, but if this was Doug, he was a monster and way ahead of his time. Put on the headphones!

I thought about this before I posted my "appreciation"...it wouldn't do to mis-attribute a performance he didn't play on in his own tribute thread. I'm taking my info from the credits on the "Squad Car, Eddie and the Showmen" comp Domenic Priore and Eddie were involved in producing it.

Here are the tunes on the collection which Doug played on. Dark Eyes is indeed on there!

Squad Car
Scratch
Las Olas
And The Angels Sing
Showmen Stomp
Movin'
Mr. Rebel
Lanky Bones
Far Away Places
Dark Eyes
We Are The Young
Young And Lonely
Break Time
Then He Kissed Me

Thanks Scott. I was hesitant to bring up Mr. Rebel until Ivan posted as I didn't know for sure if he played on that. Thanks for the research.
