I need to winnow the herd in terms of radio gear and queens in the gunsafe. I see Dave's just got in TWO AV65's (one Oly White, one Dakota red), used EC+ condition. Whew. Good thing I'm out of town doing the parallel universe Christmas thing... I am thinking about selling my Electric sitar… It is a Rogue model. But as many people said it is nearly the same quality as the expensive Jerry Jones model, the Coral one. Aaahhh, when I listen to the video a few seconds I think, I can not sell it… It makes fun to play with reverb and echo and so on! This is pure psychedelic power, you don`t need money for drugs. This sitar is better. Why do I think this??? …better I think again in this way: Aaaahhhh, a cool instrument if you play it in the right way: Twang cheers! Ralf, that playing was lovely. No idea these were out there but quick search shows anywhere between $650-850 US, plus shipping. Very cool sound. Perhaps you can find a gearaholic, someone who thinks they have everything, who needs it more than you (and you can buy another JM project or something). Oh, wait - I'm not thinking in the right way with that last part maybe. Rob Mastrianni has some chpops! I dig his electic sitar/harp guitar stylings, which remind me of some of Pat Metheny's innovations. I see Mastrianni does an eclectic thing called Beatbox Guitarin Brooklyn with belly dancers and a guy named Pete List. —Last edited: Dec 25, 2014 21:11:43 |

Well, the wind is blowin' like hell, rearranging all the sugar-like snow everywhere but where it needs to be, the wind chill is down to -26°F, but I held up pretty good yesterday. Went into town to get a Strat 3-way from my tech, and also to replace a rapidly dying much-loved old analog delay pedal. The delay has served well since the mid-80's but has some 'iffy' jacks and probably troublesome solder joints inside. I will miss it because it was stereo out with a switch to select dry or wet to the 2nd output. Nice when you want to send a bunch of stuff to one amp and just maybe a slap to another dry one. Picked up a mint/used Carbon Copy. It's nice & works great; almost double the time, not that I use it all having a separate echo pedal but they have a good rep as a basic delay. The real test was sitting down on their big sofa surrounded by 2 AV59's and 4 AV65's. Was a good lesson that even better guitars are not all created equal and they were all different animals, as Strats will be. The AV59's were both very nice; 3 of the AV65's were a notable step up though, but nothing that grabbed the hormones. But that Burgundy Mist Limited one, with a fingerboard like fine dark chocolate, was living on a higher plane. Damn what a nice guitar. But, as they said a few hundred years ago, "to insure the domestic tranquility" - I put it back. I did get a some Amazon cards for Christmas though and that damn near completely paid for something I've wanted for a long time - a decent temp-controlled soldering station. So life is good. I'm above ground and there is surf. Just thought I'd share & see how the rest are faring in the first month after the holidays, often a post-celebration doldrum period for GA's. If I can avoid reaching for my wallet, you can too. Well, did it the old-fashioned way, not an impulse buy. Ya know, paper route, mowing grass, movin' snow, takin' pop bottles back for their deposit. Found the Strat that drove the quest to play everything I could get my hands on. Just over the past couple weeks I've played 4 AV59's and 7 AV65's. Today played 4 of those AV65's, got it narrowed down to 2 and then went into their drum room with the PRRI & got serious. I'd asked the senior floor guy how they managed to acquire such mint pristine "used" guitars and he told me something I hadn't thought about. Apparently ALOT of their customers don't even play; they just like to buy guitars, take 'em, put 'em in a closet, and then bring 'em back when they need to scratch another itch. The one I finally picked still has plastic on the PG, pristine frets, and the little sticker over the trem-arm hole is still there. Ivan, I'd like to mention I really really REALLY wanted the Dakota Red to be the one, but it came in 2nd. As Martin has wisely said, when you get "the one" in your hands the thing to do is GET IT. So my Mexican will get put back in its original configuration (I'm not giving up my parchment PG with 57/62's and bridge F50), take it back to the big city, and seal the deal next week. Pics when I get it permanently installed at its new home. The guy on site is going to put the 3-way in it and do the nut for .011's for me. Pretty stoked. OK, don't want to hog the meeting, just wanted to share. Congratulations, Wes! So, which one was 'the one'??? You didn't say! Was it the Burgundy Mist '65 that you mentioned above? I think that's a stunning looking guitar, I love it! I'm sure it'll serve you well. Enjoy! —Ivan |

As good as it is, Burgundy Mist came in #3 (down from the previous weeks foray before these 2 pristine "used" ones hit the store. The One is Oly White. (I'll have to swap out my parchment PG on to it 'cause the PG on it is REALLY white.) Thicker neck & 7.25 radius where have you been all my life? I have some routine stuff for a few seconds each to eval the pickups & one guy came by & asked what that lovely tune was... (Jewel of Duende on the neck pickup.) Got to spread the gospel a bit & he now can say he's heard of the Space Cossacks. He mentioned nobody does surf around these parts. My response was politely along the lines of "no shit Sherlock." —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. |

Nice!!! There's really no bad option with those, they're all gorgeous!
Though I definitely understand the impulse to do this, my recommendation is to stick with the authentic one. Embrace it for what it is - cause it's really beautiful as it is!
I've been hip to the 7.25" radius for a long time, but yeah, the thicker neck on the '65 has been a revelation. It's become my favorite, which was very surprising, given that my hands are fairly small.
Really, he's heard of us?? I find that a bit hard to believe! But that's very nice, thank you, Wes! You should tell him about the Madeira boat cruise show on August 29th. ;)
Well, not too far away are the Exotics and the Revomatics, so he DOES have some surf options! Nice to hear he's got an interest in that stuff, clearly a very cool guy! —Ivan |

No he hadn't; but he has now!
Milwaukee is the complete other side of the state (and another world) away. Many from around these parts in the west don't venture into the two People's Republiks of..." unless they absolutely have to. But for Revomatics, Dick Dale, and now Madeira I'll chance it. I have to find that boat cruise website again; I thought I had the right one but was already looking to book a ticket and don't find their schedule up or you guys listed yet. Maybe it's too early. No reason to take it out, I firmly believe these instruments will maintain their value and become collectors items down the road. Any change in soldering does hurt the value. I don't use the neck pickup selector position on my guitars, I'm not switching to a two-way switch. |
