I realized (yesterday, at a gig) that my new-to-me craigslist FRV-1 has a loose output jack. is there a trick to tightening the nut without spinning the whatever you call it? especially with no tools?
barring that, how about with tools?

Often the jack socket is soldered to circuit board inside so be careful not too much stress on it. Tighten with whatever you have handy but if the problem recurs one option would be to put a small drop of nail varnish on the threads, let it dry a little and tighten back up. You'll be able to remove it ok if needed.

nice. I was able to get it done with a needlenose holding the inner threaded thing. (I hope). like the nail varnish idea.

Light-duty Locktite might be good too, if you're out of nail polish. I always am.

Only problem I every had with nail polish was when my wife didn't have clear and I had to use "gawd awful pink".

I always keep some with my power eyebrow set
Locktite is great but nail varnish will get you by on the fly.
The key is to let it dry a little before assembly, if and when you remove the nut the varnish residue is like a white dust and easily removed.
I looked up the FRV-1 circuit board last night and it isn't fitted with soldered to the board jack sockets but regular guitar type with connection by wires to the board.

Why not open the pedal at home and using proper tools to prevent damage, tighten jack nuts down hard, loctite 'em and go to gigs assured they will stay?

Right, I did that (semi proper tools, but anyway). It was more the initial thing of being at a gig and realizing "oh crap! this thing is really loose!"
