Permalink Help needed playing Surf rider - The Lively Ones

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I had a long debate with our guitarist last night about the intro to surf rider. He is having trouble playing the intro, as he is using hammer ons on some notes, which is distorting the rhythm.

We have both listened to the recording thousands of times. I think the notes are picked. He thinks they couldn't be anything other than hammer ons.

We are trying to capture the mood and feel of the track exactly. Can some kind sg101ers help settle this argument?

He's playing it a bit laid back here. I think the original has shorter timed notes.

Pick...I use a pick. Needs snappiness.

It's both picked notes AND hammer-ons. The hammer-on's are not the problem...the problem is the guitarists sense of feel for the riff.

Uuuuuuhhh!!!!
This is way toooo much Shadows for me!
This has got nothing to do with the coolness of the Lively Ones original.
TOTALLY boring for me. Music for old men, sorry…
This is not the future of surf music at all.
Brrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Twang cheers!

Lol! I especially like the part where he tries to plug his guitar cord into his mini Strat floatin' on a boogie board with his amp and sunglasses. Classic!

I played it pretty well until all youse guys got me thinking about it, now I suck. Jeez.

Drumsdick and I did it a while ago and I cut out the original intro altogether. Call it freedom of speech. I never liked it. Also added Fender improv around the original theme. Quite popular on YouTube. Search "richman surf rider" for ideas.

And it would be very appropriate to use your thumb also.

The especially interesting thing about this song is the bass part imo.

I totally agree. I found a great bass cover of surf rider on youtube but haven't found any tab transcriptions yet. Any pointers on that?

Congratulations for that.
That's always been a big deal, but it's very MUCH easier than playing ...awesome originals!

The awesome originals may some months off, but we are working on it. Mood and feel, and dare I say it tone are really important for us as our own songs are actually quite simplistic. Surf Rider is one of those tracks that aside from any connotations with a movie - just oozes mood and feel.

So aside from the learning process of playing a good cover, note for note, we are really thinking about the feel. We hope that in the future this will transfer to our own songs. Where we are based in HK, there are a lot of import cover bands that take shortcuts with simplified versions and we don't want to set the bar that low. Someone told me a while back that if a guitarist focused on learning to cover a song well, including the intricacies of the song they would probably write better songs. There are plenty of shoddy original songs out there.

I'm lucky in that I am working with an awesome guitarist who can usually replicate things note for note. Surf Rider has him stumped though, probably because the first time I played it I was rushing through the song and he copied that.

All of the tab I have seen has the notes on the a string hammered on, so we will probably agree to use the hammer ons. Thanks to everyone that responded. I liked every one that was posted. I couldn't find the Jon and the Nightriders version online, so here is the nearest I could find.

I use this tab: http://www.guitaretab.com/l/lively-ones/10664.html and the backing track from the download section here. I pick all the notes, except the "and 3" count; indicated by 5p7, 3p5, and 1p3 in the tab itself. It definitely softens things just a little, and sounds pretty good to my ears.
