Permalink Fairfax VA Bassist Looking For Band/Jam

New Topic

Back in the US of A after 14 years in Blighty and already missing my pub and my bandmates. Looking to jam or join/form a Surf Band in the DC 'Burbs!

I'd be all about it, but I'm a bass player as well. Tough to find folks in this area.

Hey guy's! So what your saying is that its easier to form a surf band in a small English village 40 miles NW of Cambridge, than it is to form one in a 'burb 25 miles west of our nations capitol?! Shirley you jest?! Sigh

Don't call me Shirley.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Took me two years to get the guys I was playing with. Worked for about a year before that imploded. I've tried off and on for the last year and a half to find others to play with. Get some hits, fire a few emails back & forth, and then they disappear. Had a guy that had done some pretty decent originals, and he just stopped emailing. Might be me......dunno.

We've (Group Captain and the Mandrakes) have a surf band up and running down in Fredericksburg, VA. We really don't have any plans to play in Fairfax County, Loudoun County and DC proper ... so go for it!

Also, look for a fella named "Snorre" (Steve) here on this forum. He lives in the Frederick area but works in Reston. He plays some great surf and had difficulty keeping a surf band in the Northern VA area going.

Steve played with me, until the aforementioned implosion.

Hi guys,

Your band's latest demo vid sounded pretty good and the jag's sounding great, Brian!

Slight correction, Brian - our Maryland-based ( Big Grin ) band, K-39, called it quits about a month ago after playing together for over a year - we hadn't played out much but when we did, the audiences enjoyed us. I'm proud to say we really sounded tight. We parted amicably and remain friends, so it's all good.

Basically, I think we weren't in sync with what we wanted out of the band and its direction. To some extent, this seemed to be what happened with Will's project, too. I had to bow out of that project anyway due to some family health issues at that time, followed by a mass company layoff that put me out of work for a while due to that sequestration nonsense. I'm happy to say my life has stabilized for the better with this great job in Reston (telecommuting a couple of days a week helps big time).

Currently, I've got a trio thing about to start up with a bassist friend of mine and a drummer he knows. It's a casual thing since my bassist friend plays in a couple other bands.

TRCat, if interested, we could meet up over some pints in Reston Town Center some time after work and talk surf music and all things Blighty - I can always bring my guitar and amp for jamming at some point if we feel up for it.

Actually, I wish I were still out there in Virginia. While it seemed that most musicians were into Country/Bluegrass or some death-cult-dark-wave-heavy-metal-grunge-funk-scream-o when I perused through the Craiglist ads when I lived in NoVa, there were quite a few that came about through word of mouth that were actually interested in doing something different. I think the market out there is ripe for it and I wish you the best of luck. It was a completely different musical experience for me out there in VA, but I did like the possibilities at the venues there more than here in AZ.
