Permalink Introducing the Quilter Steelair 15 Amplifier

New Topic

Noel, from one old guy to another: don't sell what you have to get something you used to have, there's no going home for almost all of us. Big Grin

Noel, I wouldn't sell the MusicMan. Just my opinion. While the new Quilter seems really nice, it looks much like a 1 trick pony. The distortion/overdrive options sound terrible to me (like they always do with a 1x15" alu cap speaker). I bet it's a huge clean monster, which is nice but not versatile.

The Hicadoolas

I'm switching the conversation about an amp for my Bass VI over to the Squier Bass VI topic.

But based on my personal experience with MicroPro and Aviator amps, there probably is decent sounding gain in the Steelair for lots of guitarists. Just not fans of these amps. IMHO. YMMV. I know what you mean though. My NU-FUZZ pedal can drive my poor MicroPro into unbelievably nasty and unlistenable distortion.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Oh cool, you got one of those NU-FUZZES? How's it sound?

Pretty amazing. Pure original Davie Allen. Very authentic, as I would expect from a pedal Ed Sanner makes using his original design. But it can overdrive my Quilter's 8-inch speaker into really brutal distortion at excessive volumes (raspberry-like flutter) if I dial it WAY up using the low registers of my Baritone-Strat or Bass VI. My Music Man 212-130HD loves it at any volume or setting though. Not so much maybe my neighbors. Big Grin

As per the original, it has no provision for external power, so you'll need to use one of these or be careful to make sure it isn't connected to anything when not in use. I use one and it works great.

You may all wonder why I'd play my Baritone Strat or Bass VI through a screaming monster fuzz pedal, with tremolo too, but really, why not? Big Grin

@Mike: We are currently recording our new album with the Weber NeoMag 15" with paper dome and cloth surround: sounds absolutly superior also compared to my other EV 12 L speaker. Much more warmth and sparkling on the weber and a really strong low end. The Weber(75W) and the SM 57 seem to be the perfect match. Even though the Weber is not as loud as the EV but that is no surprise. You can also use distortion without problems on the paper dome.

For the Quilter MicroPro 200(100W per Channel) it is the speaker to go.
But for the Steelaire (200W) you might need two or something which converts the energy into heat... Big Grin

All right, I think I need to stick to the original plan then. I'm looking forward to hearing those new recordings!

Via Deke Dickerson:

Now that the Reverend Horton Heat tour is just about over, I want to send a big note of thanks to QUILTER LABS for loaning me one of their new amps to take on this tour! The model I've been using is part of the new Aviator series and is the "Steelaire" model designed for steel guitar, but great for rockabilly/surf/country players who like a loud clean sound with a 15-inch speaker. This amp sounds to me a LOT like my vintage Standel amps, but also has a 3-knob reverb section like the Fender reverb units, killer vibrato, channel switching, etc....and it weighs almost nothing!! I have it set around "2" and almost every night one of the Rev band guys or crew will say "Man, that amp is LOUD!" I highly recommend these new Quilter amps. Check em out! I've also done a lot of recording lately with the smaller Quilter MicroPro amp. Good stuff!

Deke's been literally road-testing a pre-production model.

We've got a Steelair down here for beta testing. Played it last Saturday night. Cool little combo. Sounds good, took pedals well. I think I want a MicroPro head only though to use with my EV SRO-12l in a ported cab. More guts.

Someday soon I'm going to haul the cab up to Pat's place and do some A/B.

Keep it Drippy Brothers and Sisters!

If you have or could borrow a Bass VI, I'd love to know your opinion of how it sounds through the Steelair. Thanks!

I have a MIJ bass VI so that may happen. I'm thinking of the head for gigs I don't feel like hauling the Showman to. Sometimes I bring out the whole PA and bringing a smaller guitar rig would be helpful.

Keep it Drippy Brothers and Sisters!

Creamy delicious sound. I really do want to hear a Jazzmaster, Strat, Jaguar and Bass VI playing through one of these.

Unexpected this is. What looks like a 12-inch compared to the taller combo amp is the standard Steelair 15. The taller amp cab allows for the head to be completely removed from the cab for either rack-mounting or stand-alone use in the studio or with other speaker cabs. The head alone has an MSRP of $999. Wow!

From the announcement:

The custom speaker, the result of a lengthy collaboration between Pat Quilter and Eminence Speakers has gained ground on what a big clean speaker is capable of. Starting with Eminence's rugged cast-frame 15 inch platform for maximum durability, they added a 3-inch aluminum voice coil and hyperbolic cone to assure outstanding frequency response, power handling, and freedom from breakup. As a finishing touch, a 4 inch aluminum dome adds a hint of sweet metallic tang, resulting in a creamy full bodied tone with a citrus-y finish.

The amplifier includes a reinforced ballistic nylon cover and features a range of accessories available separately.

• Portable: 35 Pounds(16kg), 21 x 23 x 9 in (53.4 x 58.4 x 22.9 cm)
• Powerful: 200 watts (400 watts of internal headroom for maximum voltage swing)
• Dual inputs: Supports multiple instruments or buffered pedal loop
• Input mode selector: Selects Ch1, Mute, Ch2, or Ch1+2
• 4 Band EQ: Bass(100 Hz), Low Mid(500 Hz), High Mid(2kHz), Treble(5kHz)
• Limiter: Fully adjustable from clean to dirty
• Tremolo: Adjustable depth and rate
• Reverb: Adjustable depth, dwell, and tone
• Master: Adjusts output power from 0 to 200 watts
• Dual speaker outputs: 1/4", 2 to 16 ohms
• Remote control connection: Accepts RJ45 cable (Cat 5,6,7,etc.)
• Effects loop: Send, Return, and 9 volt DC out, 200 mA max
• Direct Out: 600 ohm, isolated balanced 300 mV peak
• Available accessories: Floor mount or leg mount 6 way remote controller, tilt back legs, and free ballistic nylon cover

The suggested retail price is $1,399.00 USD.

I'd really like to hear a surf guitar thru one of these.
And a bass VI!

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I played one at a club gig a few weeks ago. Very tight, and louder than snot! The open-backed cab can't deliver the ultimate bottom-end thunk, but it's not too shabby! I've been lobbying for two years for a limited edition surf model, featuring blond tolex, closed-back cab, and a real spring reverb with pre- and post option. Pat said. "Matt, if we get a hundred requests, we'll build it! 99 to go."

I got to see Deke Dickerson play with Reverend Horton Heat this Thursday, and there it was front and center. Sounded great. But I trust Matt's assessment regarding the low end probably even better if played through a closed back cab (in a Surf context).

Ran

The Scimitars

I'll put my vote in for the limited edition surf model, featuring blond tolex, closed-back cab, and a real spring reverb with pre- and post option.
