I'm telling you, use Labellas. You won't need to mess with pot values, because the tone is balanced on all strings.

Jeez man, steady! I found a supplier here in the UK so i may well check them out in 2/3 weeks time. The description however states " these strings are bright for flat wounds". Not what I was expecting to see after your suggestion. Nonetheless, I will give them a go as its a "mod" i can do without leaving the house!

LOL, sorry.

They are bright for flatwounds, and that's what makes them well balanced. You can turn the tone knob down and you won't get the syndrome of muddy EADG, bright BG strings.

No worries mate. I love the urgency in your tone, honestly, ive only just put pyramids on which arent cheap so once they have had 2/3 weeks more i will order some Labellas and report back. Thanks for the recomendation.

I'd like to hear your impressions as well.
Currently I'm with Pyrmaids too (.012-.056, rounds) on my JM and I totally love them.
Remember! 2-3 weeks Big Grin

I also had this problem for a long time. The best thing is to get a better amp! Showman doesn't even produce that ice peak! Don't buy a twin reverb, it will make it even more worse. Showman, vibroloux, fender super sonic 60 or bandmaster is the way to go. You will be a lot luckier without changing things on your guitar. I also think the eq pedal might be a good option.

I had the same situation with a "similar" 2 P-UP guitar. I lowered the bridge P-UP a few turns of the screw (on the treble side), & the tone was MUCH more balanced & not as treble-ee. Brian mentions this earlier in this thread, & I have had much success "experimenting" with pickup height adjustment. This next comment may seem TOO obvious but: This works on ALL guitars ! We have a tendency to wonder about lots of of other factors in this situation (all warranted), but pickup height adjustment is key to the tone of all electrics..(Added edit): Surfocaster mentions "I have a Princeton Reverb amp". I got my first one in 1965 & it played fabulous surfmusic...(as much as it was "unfashionable" after '65)..we said "Balderdash" & injected ALL sets with surf til' 1970 (& beyond) !

The Princeton is a 65 reissue and not an original. I doubt i will get rid of it as I really like it. May get a small tweed one day to complement the blackface. Will drop the treble side of the pup a touch more and see what happens. Im looking forward to trying the Labellas that have been forced on me! Playing last night I noticed that if I hold my concentration when I hit the top two strings andbe a little more gentle the shriek disappears but its hard to be consistent. So, im starting to think that a better balanced set of strings may be the answer.
Cheers
