Mr Moto or Surf Rider.

Man, I'm stealing this thread for a set list. :o)

Of course Apache isn't really a surf song...

It depends. Jorgen Ingmann's version has many surfy guitar licks. Muting, tic-tics, delay, chimey tone, energizing beat, and a sense of motion.

In contrast, versions by the Shadows and the Ventures do not sound surfy to me.

What makes something a surf song is the performance, not the song itself.

My fave. I always thought the Ingmann version grooved.

Can't find the original on Youtube, but I keep coming back to this song:

It's so hard to pick just one. I think I have to go with "Midnight Run" by The Super Stocks. When I first heard it I thought it sounded unlike any other surf song I had heard before, yet at the same time it couldn't be more surf.

Planet Thorburn
Tales Of Absurdity

I already selected 'Similau' by The Surfaris.

But right now, I'm looking at 'Tight Turn' by The Raybeats.
This song makes me go all guitar wonky. It's so, Rumblers like.

Right now it would be The Roadrunners-Quasimoto and Pintor by the Pharaos.
It changes every so often.

I live for cars and girls.

'Baja" by the Astronauts

Of course, you're right, but we can't just END the thread. Big Grin

I don't know why everyone is so mesmerized by Baja. It is a quintessential song, and it does have "That Sound" which they definitely put into the spotlight. But really Penetration had that too, and as far as songs go I'm much more down with Margaya or Moon Dawg for intensity and overall creativity. Not to take anything away from Baja, truly one of the greats, and how can you ever go wrong with Hazelwood? But it's definitely not the best song IMOSHO. Big Grin

results based on my itunes playcount - I won't show the actual figures, or somebody will call me crazy Big Grin

  1. Everybody Up
  2. Malibu Run
  3. Casbah
  4. Squad Car
  5. Margaya
  6. The Cossack

See that's the one where I don't get it. It's such an obvious "Pipeline" knockoff, with a little bit of "Comin' Home Baby" thrown in for the chorus. IMO The Pyramids' other originals were better ... but there's still a bunch of other first wave stuff I'd take over those.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

"Greatest" is sooooooo subjective...

Hello Louie,

Greatest surf song? I have no idea. I could not even pick just one as my favorite.

When someone asks me what's a good surf song? I always reply that "good" is not needed. They all are good.

Talk to you later,
Norm

I've heard plenty of bad surf songs,
wanna buy my crappy cds?
I've probably got around 100, that I bought in the 90s, and early 2000s
that I listened to once, and will never listen to again.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

This one's definitely topping the list for me currently.

-Damon.
