Permalink Fender 62 Jazzmaster RI - worth the $$$?

New Topic

I've been searching a while now for a good deal on a used one, but thus far I've not found one at my price point.

Just wondering what the opinions are regarding a new one? $1600 is a lot of money, but most of the used ones I've bid on are not far apart in price so..?

I'm kind of a "frugal" guy and $1000 sounds about right for a brand new one to me but Fender doesn't agree. Big Grin

Btw, I can probably wait and get 10-15% off plus free ship and no tax from an online dealer, so were looking at an out the door price of about $1360.

Thanks

Be patient, used ones pop up fairly often. You should be able to score one for under $1k if you wait.

Weather its worth the money is up to you. My AVRI JM was definitely worth it to me to buy it new in 2005 or so. I've gotten a ton of use out of it and continue to do so. Its a well made guitar overall and once you establish a good baseline with its setup and embrace some of its quirks/features (depending on your point of view) it is a great tool.

It's probably going to be more expensive down the road, so it might make sense to buy one (new or used) this year.

A lot of companies have been experiencing margin pressure because of higher commodities costs. There has been some relief from that lately, but with all of the monetary easing by governments, there is a good chance for higher prices for real assets longer term.

Fender sure seems to be pushing prices higher in their Custom Shop offerings, particularly this year. They may be starting at the high end, but it's a good bet that it will work its way down the production line-up too.

I bought my one 'new' too (albeit at a reduced 'special' price - it was a 2006 AVRI that had been sitting 'new' in the shop for 5 years). Dunno why nobody bought it before me, but its a superb geetar.

All previous points made here are valid and I love my AVRI JM...NOW...but... it took a lot of work and effort to get the thing gig-worthy. When I first got the guitar (2009), I took it out on a gig and for no apparent reason, in the middle of a song, the bridge sunk into the body! After much wrestling and fiddling, my guitar guy finally made it work with light gauge strings easily bendable for modern use. I also had a buzzstop installed which works well as claimed, but as anyone who has one knows, it's difficult to find a long enough first string. There's extra string length on a JM anyway and the buzzstop adds even more.In general, I feel the design of the guitar keeps it from being reliable enough to use at the types of gigs I usually do.

Having said all that, I love the way it sounds, plays and feels. It's really hard to tremolo pick on other guitars like I can on this one and it looks like the guitar my first teacher had, so I do have a certain sentimental attachment to it for those reasons.I believe all the effort/bucks towards stability and playability were well worth it because I intend this guitar to remain a part of my collection for many years to come.I decided to make it a dedicated "surf practice/recording guitar" by installing .012-.052 flatwound strings and playing it mostly around the house.

I say go for the gold. Only $8500!!!!!

The pun is sooo being asked for, sorry - more like fool's gold. Ha ha.
Really? Face Palm So it's worth more than 5 times this $1600 thin skin Shock :

*I have the gold JM thin-skin, it's wonderful, build quality and sound is top notch. 9.5" radius though, if you can handle it.

I have a '62 AVRI Jaguar that I am really happy with. Swapped in a Mustang bridge and installed stay term. It's a wonderful guitar. I am planning on buying a black AVRI Jazzmaster this summer. I can't say enough good things about these guitars.

I say yes yes yes they are worth the $$$. I have both the AVRI Jaguar and the Jazzmaster and they are VERY well-built guitars that sound great. I swapped both the bridges with Fender USA Mustang bridges. Yummy tone!
