Permalink RIP George Sisson from the Sub-Mersians?

New Topic

I just received a comment on one of my Sub-Mersians videos on YouTube:

RIP George Sisson, Bassist for the Sub-mersians. George passed away on 4-28-12 from complications of leukemia. Rock on.

Can anyone verify? Anyone know George or Jessica?

oh no, this is horrible if true.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I hope it's not true. I met George back in '97 or '98 or so when he came to Austin. He went to our (Squid Vicious) show. Really nice guy. I hope it's not true.

The YouTube commenter is George's brother, so I'm afraid it is true. He is going to send me the obituary and memorial service details when the family has them finalized. I'll post them here.

I really enjoyed seeing the Sub-Mersians during our very first trip to California in April, 2004.

Hi, I am George's brother John, also a surf music fan. We are still planning the memorial which will be in Santa Cruz. This is the obituary taht will appear in the paper:

George Lee Sisson, computer support technician for the Watsonville and Santa Cruz School Districts passed away on April 28, 2012 from complications from a bone marrow transplant which he had received to treat a rare leukemia. He was married to his friend Shari Sevier on November 11, 2011 at 11:11:11 AM. This beloved, cherished husband of less than 5 months passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by friends and love, leaving behind his best friend in life. . George adored music and was bassist of the Santa Cruz surf band The Sub-Mersians from 1999 to 2004. Born April 17, 1963 to John E. Sisson Jr. and Barbara Lee Sisson in Pasadena, California, George grew up in La Cañada, California but moved with his mother to Hawaii in 1972. He graduated from Hilo High School in 1981. He attended UC Santa Cruz and graduated in 1991 with a degree in biology. George was an enthusiastic conversationalist and was known for his sense of humor and a smile that would light up a room. He also loved motorcycling and stand-up comedy. He is survived by his wife Shari Sisson of Vacaville, step-son Alan Sevier of Berkeley, father John Sisson Jr. of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, brother John Sisson of Irvine, California, niece Lee K Sisson and nephew Samuel D Sisson. He will be deeply missed by them. A lifelong animal lover George asked that donations be made in his name to the Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund (http://wildcatfund.org/donations.html).

RIP George

I was SHOCKED today when I found out...because I didn't know that George had died on April 28th. Nobody contacted me, including former band members. I did some fast internet research and made a phone call to my old guitarist buddy from the band and THEN I knew the sad news. I knew George was fighting leukemia...and now he's in a better place.

The Sub-Mersians was my real second band [being a founding member, and carrying on the band until we broke up; I stayed with it despite band members coming and going]. I had a lot of great memories and fun gigs with the Sub-Mersians. Guess there won't be a reunion, unless we go back and gather up the original 3 guys...

If anyone hears of a memorial celebration in Santa Cruz, that hasn't happened yet, please let me know. If it already happened, I send my regards and best wishes to the family. Thanks.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Hello Everyone,

Yes, very sadly it's true. George was diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia in February 2011. We parted ways domestically and artistically back in 2008 and haven't been particularly close since, though we remained friendly and were able to reconnect somewhat during his illness. My heart goes out to his family and particularly to Shari, his new wife of only five months. She was an absolute saint and gave him much joy and love as she was right by his side throughout his illness.

I am sorry for not thinking of notifying our extended surf music family when making contact with old friends about this news (particularly you, Stretch - I assumed since you knew about his illness when we last spoke that you were in the loop with his family- but really, my bad!). The band, the music and the community were incredibly important and vital to George, and gave him much happiness in his life. I know he would want you all to know of his passing.

I do not yet know of memorial details but I'm sure Brother John will post those here when the family is ready.

E ho'omaha me ka maluhia, my friend. Go in Peace. May you Ride Into the Surf and catch that eternal wave.

Jess

Same here. The forum must not like being behind https or something?

Right clicking the broken image link icon gives you the actual URL which does pull up the pic:
