Permalink Fifty Foot Combo RIP

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

sorry for off topic, But I really like the Live Version of "Jack the Ripper"
that is on the Insect Surfers 10 in. record on Dionysus records, recorded on the Phil Dirt show. The INsects have the Link sound on some of their songs, and I think they did a fabulous job on it, and gave it just enough of a new edge.

as for 50 ft Combo,
just amazing.
I really like A "Strike the Early Years" and "Go Hunting" too.

There was a "fight" between SP and 50 Foot Combo which was captured on film for a Dutch television show(I wish I had a copy). We had decided to cut our 8 week European tour short by a week and go home. We fired the booking agency and the tour manager for all kinds of reasons (Dalibor can vouch for this) and went home. The last show was in Amsterdam and the next show (which was now being canceled) was to be with 50 Foot Combo. They heard that we were canceling and came up to Amsterdam to kick our asses Very Happy . This Dutch TV show decided to interview us cramped into a small WC for some reason and 50 Foot Combo showed up and started heckling us (esp me "fat piece of shit" etc) from the outside. During the interview I went out to take them on professional wrestling style (with camera rolling), but things calmed down, they stayed for the show, and we made peace over many Dutch beers. I think our size and numbers helped out-they were all about 5 feet tall and 100 lbs.

I still listen to my "Go Hunting" lp!

I'll put in a vote for Minesweeper. And I kind of like Drums a Go Go.

Bumping this old thread. I just saw this from the band on FB:

So, the Monstrophonic Sound will once again come your way. This is not a comeback, mind you. Though we did got some more offers and we are seriously considering doing some more shows!

For the SJOCK festival we have something special : original organ grinder and sleeve-artist MATTO LE D will join our ranks once more !! So what you get is the 1997-2003 line-up...

EVIL-A-GOGO !!

Anything that might increase the chances of Evil a Go-Go getting reissued? AWESOME.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I dunno if they would be into it,
but I would love to have them at the SG101 convention.

reissue would be great
new shows would be great
new album would be great
anything is great

This is indeed great news! We'll take anything we can from the mighty 50 Foot Combo!!! And here's deeply, deeply hoping it leads to a more permanent reactivation of the band.

What Mom said.

Sorry to disappoint you guys but from what I hear it was just a temporary come back. But who knows ?

I read somewhere, although i can't remember where. Fifty Foot Combo have been playing yearly for a number of years past. Does anyone know if this is true.

I was super tempted to start a new thread titled "More Bongo in Surf, Please!" but figured I'd be a good citizen and bump this existing thread (a pretty great one at that!)

At any rate, I scored Go Hunting & Strike! The Early Years 1994-2000 on CD a month or two ago and had grabbed Evil A Go-Go some time back.

I've been listening to all three albums a fair amount lately, and maybe its just me, but I can't stop focusing on the prominence of the percussion in the mix for most tracks. Well that, and the drummer is just a monster. Of course these 3 albums are full of great songs and the band overall is really sensational, but man, that percussion mix and that killer presence of the bongos(!).

More bongo (like this, anyhow) in surf, please!

I LOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEE Fifty Foot Combo!!! Evil A Go-Go is a masterpiece of modern surf. Those guys are just monsters. I miss them dearly (though I must admit that I wasn't enamored of the direction they were taking on their last few releases). Anyway, yes, bongos! They really make it work so well, and it accentuates the deep groove of much of their music, a groove that would be nice to see in more of the modern surf music.

Fady, make sure you pick up Caffeine - it's a transitional album for them, but still has a handful of great surf tracks. And the live album following that, The Monstrophonic Sound Live at Ernesto's is very good, too, though fairly lo-fi.

Thanks for the tip on those other 2 releases, Ivan!

I don't think it is the same show as the recording, but the earlier referenced "Last Show" of the the Monstrophonic Sound tour was lo-fi too. Reminds me just how far portable recording technology has advanced in so little time.

Anyone have a copy of the "Evil A Go-Go" (2000)? download mentioned in the OP?

We where at their most recent show (about 6 weeks ago) and they where selling vinyls from the original pressing of 'Go Hunting' ('Zebraah' record label). I think the price was €15.

Christoph,

What was their style/sound like?
Surf, or garage?
