After a gig on the weekend, a lady came up to me and quite surprised me, she said 'I love surf music, it's so sexual and erotic'. Now I'm pretty sure she wasn't trying to make a move, but this comment surprised me in that I'd never really thought of surf music quite like this. We discussed it a little further (clothes on lol) and for her songs like Bombora by The Atlantics really create the swells etc etc...get my drift?
Surf music is elemental and has an emotion pretty unique to it, but sexual? Ok, I think I see this. I'm cool with that.
Discuss.

I think like most instrumental music surf comes across different to everyone. That's one of the things I love about it!

Ha ha !!!
good one JP.
Too me, some of the more Loungy and or Moody(cinematic) sub-genres of surf, especially some of the stuff on the recent Bambi Molesters DVD sounds Romantic or Sexy to me.
also the Vanduras, the Blue Hawaiians, and the some songs by the Huntington Cads could be used to make a great "get her in the mood" cd.

slightly off topic.
I know I would rather hear romantic surf instrumentals in
"adult movies" than the usual crap that is in them.
(not that I would watch such smut)

And, hey...watch what you're sayin' about "adult movie" soundtracks...they've been keeping the wah-wah pedal industry alive for years!

Well, I don't know about you guys, but Man or Asto-Man songs get me in the mood to put on a space helmet and do all sorts of things. Start fires. Fly. Conquer planets. And get all James T Kirk on some hot alien babes. But that's just me...

We got used in porn once.
I don't think surf music is sexual though, for several reasons. Beat, usually a solo voice/focus, tempo, keys, the bands, the fan base, aqes, clean aesthetic, song titles, art work.

If you've ever read a Dick Dale interview, he would agree with you that it can be sexual.

Although it doesn't do the same for me*, I can understand how some people would find it sexual and erotic.
One advantage it has no lyrics to distract you and start making you sing along.
*Much like I am obsessed with cars, but I don't find them "sexy", the same goes for music or musical instruments.
