Jack White instro-surf album? I'd buy it! My son might start listening to my Los Straight Jackets, Ghastly Ones and Bambie Molesters! He is responsible for turning my son onto Zep and an interest in vintage blues. Now if he would just stop
doing that high pitched meedly meedly meedly sound with his whammy pedal, it would be nice. Big Grin Big Grin

I remember watching the first few minutes of either a concert movie or a documentary on the white stripes and it started with them making a lot of noise on the radio how the white stripes were going to perform an outdoor set. Made a big song and dance, fans got there, band got there. Played one song and left. Turned it off and I've pinpointed that to be the exact moment where I realized I don't like Jack White.

We're slagging off Jack White, right?

I am a fan of Jack White. Hipster persona or not, he writes some rockin tunes. However, I spent a decade resisting before I finally gave in to how good the music was.

Pav.. that was their own DVD. While they were on the road they got a radiostation to set up an impromptu live performance. They had to keep
their travel times but stopped to at least show up in a town that would never have live acts such as the white stripes (at that time).
Plus it was very rock n roll. Remember its suppose to be rebellious not a folky love in. Granted I would still want to tackle him and force him to sing me 5 more tunes while he sobbed out of fear from a husky little tattoo'd father pissed that his son didnt get a full free concert for ..uhm free. This thread is officially hijacked!

Jack White comes off as pretentious and full of himself, and sometimes passes off garbage for music just because he is Jack White. But sometimes the stuff he rocks out is downright amazing. White Stripes is very hit or miss for me. But man, when they hit, they hit!

And like Tavo said, if he put out an instro surf album, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I think he'd turn a lot of folks on to surf music, and overall it would be good for the genre.

My Favorite Jack White music was the Bluegrass songs he did in
Cold Mountain starring Jude Law, and Nicole Kiddman.

Back to the thread... Jeff, you'll be happy to know that when I was recording this past Sunday I A/B'd the tank and the pedal just for yucks and the tank did sound better/warmer than the pedal. Still, I don't think live anyone really cares or can tell the difference. Except, you of course... Big Grin

Good point, Shivers.... Most (sober) folks only care if they like what they hear, not what's making the noise. 'course the rest of 'em just want to dance and scream "Free Bird" Big Grin

Jack White got balls man. He is original, in his way (not the first white boy to pose the Blues-man shtick), and in it for the love. Can be annoying as hell too.
In "It Might Get Loud" as I recall, he had the nerve to teach Jimmy Page chords to one of his songs... "no, not that one, that one...", as if they're equals. Whack
I liked though how his jaw dropped when Jimmy majestically gave the "Whole Lotta Love" opening. He and The Edge almost cried. He dropped the guitar to between his knees, almost an unconscious gesture, as if "I'm not worthy to hold this thing".
But he got balls.

As much as I love the music that Jack White puts out, I would in no way call him 'original'. First of all, most of his White Stripes music is completely derivative of The Flat Duo Jets, which Jack even admits are a huge influence. Even more, he has also claimed to be highly influenced by The Immortal Lee County Killers and John Spencer Blues Explosion. If you go back and listen to either of these bands, you will realize that the majority of Mr. White's material is a nearly direct recreation of them.

I thought the same thing. I LOVED the Flat Duo Jets' first album. They did an AMAZING job of the song "Chiquita!" Their later stuff didn't capture my attention as much but I did hear the influence in the White Stripes.

I am in no way saying that being a copycat band of Flat Duo Jets is a bad thing. Honestly, White Stripes filled a void for me, until Dexter started his new project.

I agree about the first Flat Duo Jets album being top notch and the others failing to live up to the standard. That isn't to say that the subsequent albums weren't great.

There is little doubt, in the process of recording, that a tank is going to have nuances that will be missed by using a pedal. The same can be said for many delays and such that wouldn't make a huge difference live, but on tape they just fall short.

I like a majority of Jack White's material, but he isn't exactly original. He is somebody that is deeply rooted in nostalgia. He compiles a bunch of ideas from that and then makes an album out of it. He has done this particularly well and through it has created something that is organic, original but borrowed.

I love his tone in this video, everything about it. This is as original as he gets, in my opinion, and it is amazing.

So who is "original"? Everyone borrows or steals.

I haven't really liked much of Jack White's work outside the White Stripes. But De Stijl and Elephant really do it for me.
