what are your suggestions

What are you using it for?

Also, I did a quick search and I don't think they make hand held recorders that cost over $500. Careful though, a couple of the more expensive ones use old technology. It seems handheld recorders are becoming a thing of the past. Smartphone and external stereo mic is probably something to look at.

I picked up a TASCAM DR-05 for $100.00 Sounds awesome, has two built in condenser mics, battery's last a long time, records wav or mp3, and with the standard supplied memory you can record about 17 hours of wav files.

My drummer has a Zoom handheld, they are about the same, the Zoom is a little narrower, but the Tascam records a bit longer on the standard memory.

I can vouch for the Sony PCM-D50, I used it for my youtube vids. I got mine used for $350, and I think it sounds better than the two mics and USB-preamp I just bought.

I use a TASCAM DR-07 for sketching out songs. I'm pretty happy with it. It's pretty user friendly.

Has anyone tried the Zoom H4n? Looks like it has a lot of features.

Tascam DR series are good. We have the DR-1

The DR-05 at $99 was tempting but went with the Zoom H4n for all of the features including metronome, tuner, compressor, limiter, 4 tracks etc.

What are your plans with it? Demos? Live audio? Both?

Do you have audio editing software on your computer? If not, I suggest Audacity, it is free and very easy to use.

I have a 5 year old Edirol R-09 that we used to record all our rehearsals. It worked fine with an outboard Sony Condenser mic hanging from a bicycle repair stand in the middle of the room. Real sophisticated huh? Wink

You're not drunk if you can put your socks on while standing.

The Zoom comes with Cubase

I also use an Edirol. It sounds great and has excellent battery life. I use it to record gigs, and the recordings come out consistently good every time.

I have good results with an iphone 3 and a blue mikey - pretty balanced. I use it to record my gigs. Don't think you'll need to spend over a few hundred. I've used the Zoom's those are pretty good to, but my iphone is just more convenient and sounds just as good with the blue mikey and blueFire software. There is a diff mic by I think tascam for the iphone 4

I'd go for a Tascamp DP-004 or DP-008 and an external mic. I have the 004 and it's a great piece of kit!

Or, you could grab a Zoom R16, a couple mics and still be well under your $1k mark.

I just bought a zoom H2n, on the recommendation of a friend. he uses it to record practices, shows, sound for video, everything. also, there's an article about handhelds in this month's acoustic guitar.

thanks

Sonys... the D50 in particular. All the others are cheap pieces of plastic crap... I'm amazed at the quality of recordings with the outboard mikes... and it works well with the Rode stereo mike.
