I'm interested to see if we can identify the top 20 surf essential tunes of all time - 60's or revivalist. It's partly to make sure our band is giving people what they want, but also to see if it uncovers any hidden gems.
Being new to SG101, I don't know if this forum is the place to do it, or if it has already been done many times and veteran members are already rolling their eyeballs and drumming their fingers!
I was going to do a Facebook poll but we don't yet have enough followers with surf knowledge to be worth it.

IMHO, for proto-surf and original surf as originally performed, what's on Birth of Surf, Birth of Surf Vol. 2, and Toes on the Nose compilation CDs cover the era very well.
Or Surf Beat '80 by Jon & the Nightriders for more contemporary performances of original surf hits. Just playing the all tunes on that record would make a great first set.
Don't forget Dick Dale. Lots of his early material still sounds leading edge today.
The best single place to go for contemprary surf is the Brave New Surf comp. There may be great things that aren't on it, but what are on it are gems spanning the spectrum of surf today by the many of the best bands in the business. Just playing the tunes on that record would make a great show.
A lot of people here will justifiably tell you to start writing original material. It's a good idea too.
I hope this points you in the direction you want to go.

I don't claim to know much at all but I've 'liked' your FB page
A subjective topic and IMHO all the ones I was thinking of have been mentioned above! (EDIT - 'Rumble')
+1 for writing your own - put your own stamp on the music and you may come up with a classic yourself!

It really depends on the crowd you are playing for, if you are playing a casino with a mixed crowd they will just want to hear pipeline wipeout and sleepwalk, of you are playing to fans of the genre they will want to hear a deeper selection of covers

Hi Noel,
Yes, we've pillaged the Birth of Surf collections and very fruitful it was too! I haven't seen the Brave New Surf comp so I will take a look. We went through the Cowabunga! boxed set which may be something similar. Thanks for the suggestions...
