Permalink Most overrated "classic"?

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Next

Perhaps the problem here is that the original versions of these tunes have been listened to a bit too long.. that being the case.. add your thumbprint to it!
"Wipeout" is really a sort of JAZZ solo for your drummer if you think about it. (I'm sure Mel Taylor did!). Nokie Edwards did great solos over it, also.. makes the original versionpale but you have to start somewhere.

I have my own little arrangements (with my own little tricks) for "Penetration", "Pipeline"..etc. BTW "RUMBLE" has got so much air and space in it - both for guitar and bass - that I and Mr. Bass never play it the same twice. Also.. IMHO Rumble played thru an UNCRANKED amp is just silly and perhaps that's where the tedium comes from.
Bottom line.. if the tune is getting a bit too staid.. SPICE IT UP!

MHO... JM

My vote would also go to "Let's Go Trippin'," which is
just dreadful.

As far as Link Wray is concerned, I'd go as far as to say
that his entire output is overrated. Yawn.

(Of course, the three most overrated bands/artists of all time
are Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, and The Allman Brothers.) Lame Puke

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

Them's fightin' words tough-guy!!! Fight Stir the Pot Wink
(I'll let you get away with Aerosmith, and assume you
haven't heard Clapton in Cream, Derek & the Dominoes
or John Mayall's Bluesbrakers, but the Allman Brothers:
IMHO were, and still are as good as any band that's ever
existed in any genre. Link Wray was a pioneer, and great
until the end).

Derek and the Dominoes are one of the most spectacular bands of all-time. Their album is amazing. It is my second favorite album of all-time tied with Tsar Wars.

Allman Brothers wrote some good stuff. Jessica anybody?

Also, on the subject of writing Pipeline and Wipeout in High School. I don't think that makes the songs any better or any more to be respected. Good songs are good songs despite when and where they were written. Personally, I prefer the stuff that my band wrote when we were 18-19 more than Wipe Out. I will figuratively smack anybody who calls any of our songs worse than Wipe Out.

Here is the order of surf rock from best to worst:
Everything
Strange Dave
Wipe Out

Surfin' Bird gets my vote because:
It has vocals.
It doesn't have a guitar melody.
It was written to fuel a new dance craze, "The Bird."
It's a novelty song, not a surf song.
It was done a band from The Twin Cities.
...who also did a song called "Dancin' Santa."
It's a bass line, bad drums, nonsense lyrics, and guitars so low in the mix you can barely hear the chords.
It has "Surfin'" in the title for the sole purpose of hitchin' the gravy train to the locomotive.
And don't tell me about how good The Cramps version is ... it sucks, too.

P.S. Those who knock "Pipeline," "Mr. Moto," "Wipeout," etc., may you get severe arthritis and may your amps burn like the fires of hell!
Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

For me, "Wipe Out" is overrated simply because the Surfaris have several songs that are much (much, much, much) better and get a fraction of the recognition. "Point Panic," "Storm Surge," "Burnin' Rubber," "Dune Buggy," that ripping version of "Similau" ... I'd much rather hear those than "Wipe Out" or "Surfer Joe."

Oh, and:

mournblade
Aerosmith

I've never seen Led Zeppelin spelled that way before.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

OK. _ 'Over-Rated'_ is probably not the right word for what a lot of people are describing. So don't get your undies in too much of a bundle. Frankly, if I never hear or play the Chantays version of Pipeline again, I'll die a happier man.

BUT THAT'S ME, OK? Don't take it personally .
Kiss

Actually the first version of Pipeline I ever heard was Agent Orange's. Rock
Maybe that has something to do with it.

Surfin' Bird is Eddie Angel's favorite song. I don't think The Trashmen wrote it either, it's a blatant cover (cough-cough-rip-off) of The Coasters "Bird is the Word" and "Papa Ooh-Mau-Mau" (or however you spell that). Its also used quite amusingly in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket". I think it is probably one of the greatest songs of all time. Wink

Please lets stick to the surf genre, ok?

I think the songs mentioned here as overrated need to be taken on an indiviual level of distaste. I really like most of the songs being shot down here, but I just don't care for Surf Rider... if I am playing 3 sets of surf covers, that is the one song I am not looking forward to. I have never had a sax player to perform it with, and without the sax, I think the melody loses a lot of it's cool. Songs like "Wipe Out" and "Surfer Joe" are always audience faves, so I enjoy them because the crowd does.

Hey, who's are these guys playing Wipe Out with Nokie Edwards (writer of Surf Rider aka: Spudnik)?

Ted, you should substitute the drum solo from the Beatles 'the end', another air drummers favorite. Twisted Evil

Woah, they should do the End. That song is set up for three guitars. It would be perfect.

Not to nitpik but Bird is the Word and Papa Oom Mow Mow were by the Rivingtons Smile

Personally, I despise Bustin Surfboards and Malibu Run. Randy Holden's Malibu Run kicks ass, but it's not the same song

Which Malibu Run are you thinking of? I only know the Fender IV song by that name (and it somehow got mixed up with Little Ollie on one of those Japanese bootlegs).

The Lively Ones "Malibu Run" is the one I'm referring to, but several other bands covered it. The Halibuts covered it on one of their first albums.

Oddly enuff, the Randy Holden cd that has the track listings screwed up isn't really a boot. He plugs it on his website and some of the acetates were credited to him if I remember correctly.

Oh yeah....that other Malibu Run...gotcha.

When you buy that "Surf Guitar God" CD from Randy Holden, I think you are actually getting a CD-R copy of that Japanese bootleg plus a few other tracks. Razz

I don't like The Lonely Surfer, or the Endless Summer Theme. I wouldn't call those classics, though. They're more like filler material for surf comps.
