My Strat had tens on it when I got it. I'm gonna play with those until they're sufficiently worn out (which won't be too much longer) and then switch to a heavier gauge.

I switched to the D'addario 65's after hearing this (Thanks a lot Ran! At least I hope it was a suggestion and I'm not ripping on your style or nothing!) Wink

Well, why would I think you're ripping on my style? I'm glad you like them (at least that's what I gather from your post).

Ran

You know like a big 'ol copy cat. Yeah, I do like them. They have larger surface area and don't flop around at all. Just played my other guitar with 11's on it for the first time in a few weeks and man now they feel wimpy!

I'll be looking into flatwound strings, in the coming future, since it seems they're more preferable for surf guitar.

As to scratch "picking" (a la "Diamond Head), I'll take a wild guess that flatwounds are best, for that.

Matt
Nope. If you try the Nokie Edwards style string squeak, ala Apache and Diamond Head with flatwounds, you'll be endlessly frustrated. The only strings that you can do the scratch squeak thing on decently, are the rounds. And plenty of echo and reverb!

At the moment I'm using Fender 11 flats on the Wilson Bros VM65, Roto 11s on the Strat and Fernandes Jazzcaster, GHS 10 bottom-heavies on my Gretsch...can't think of what's on the others at the moment, but they have 10s. I'm working my way up to having at least 11s on everything, and have a couple sets of 12 flats waiting for me to take the plunge.

For years I've used round Dean Markley light top-heavy bottom (10-52), but I just recently changed to some round Gibson (11-52) with a wound third string. It really tames that third string down on my Strat and that's a good thing. Very Happy

ive always either used both d'addario 12 gauge chormes or wound.

im thinking of changing to 11 gauge dean markleys or something. im starting ti look for a differnt sound.

i get old: 9-46 for me please!

Giannini 0.12s, or D´addario when I find them for a decent price. Flatwounds rarely appear on the market down here (southern Brazil), and when they do (D´addario Chromes) the price´s not worth it.

I like a heavier bass than 49, so I used to get the heavy top skinny bottom or whatever, ernie balls, then trade the 10, 13,17, for 11, 14,18.

I tried the not even slinky and found the unwound G WAY tooo loud.

dang.

THe NEpTuNeS

Just set my guitar up with some ghs 13 flats. I really like the change in tone and the feel of them. It's definitely an improvement from the 10 rounds I had before.

WaimeaBay
you 10 & 11 guys (or gals) really gotta step it up a notch. Your tone wll thank you Smile

I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys 46's to 9's for so many years on my Jaguars I don't belive in piano strings or Bridge Cables and bass strings it's all on how you play your axe, technique and the voice of your guitar amp and good speakers

Play with what ever strings you desire any guage any style any brand Very Happy

blow the small and technical stuff off just have fun and surf it up and remember why were all playing guitar in the 1st place, its a love a passion and an art.

Here's a sample that you don't need 11's or higher
Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys 46's to 9's , 62 Jaguar, 64 Bassman, 65 Reverb tank

I would have never guessed that Kyle didn't have heavy flatwounds on his guitar. It sounds great.

I think I started with slinky 009s on my Jag too, but I could never get the tone like you do out of it - I have 11 chromes on mine and am very happy with that.

But hell, man, I've dug your tone for a while. Makes a great argument that a lot of it is in the player, not the strings.

~B~

That's kinda funny I was just thinking the 12s on my Jaguar felt too light the otherday. If the shortscale makes 12s feel "floppy" then I could not imagine putting 9s on these guitars and being able to fret a chord and have all 6 strings in tune. I think Kyle hit on good point and that's how important the tank is. My Rickenbacker sounds like a surf guitar through my tank.

Thank you ~B~ for the comp man I love your tone your getting from your Showman it doesn't get any better then that 85 watts of pure Fender juice Drool

I used thicker strings before but my playing doesn't jive I mean it's not that my hands are weak I just play faster and better with 46s and get this the picks I use save my strings from breaking and I can pick faster with Jim Dunlop Nylon picks size .60mm I gave a dozen to Mike of The Verb' a few months back and he said the same thing.

1st off BillAqua dude it's been a long time how have you been? good to see ya! man from day uno I have always dug your tone to this very day and my favorite favorite song of your's is "The Saints Wake" Timeless killer arrangement and well recorded Very Happy

I haven't had any issues with keeping all 6 strings in tune with my 46s-9s
or lead, full chord issues.

I love Ric's I need to get a John Lennon model someday "The Liver Pool"

BillAqua hit me up sometime man! don't be a stranger

Cheers

Thanks Kyle, I've liked your tone as well. I think on "Saints Wake" I had Pyramid Flatwound 13s on my Jaguar. Id say getting away with light strings on a Jaguar is pretty heroic, you sound good on it.

Thank you Bill, It never crossed my mind on why I use the strings I use they just feel good and sound good to me and I never really thought about it until I came across this thread weeks ago on the kind of strings others are using but it's very informative to read what everyone is using these days.

Do you know if Pyramid makes my size and roundwound?? I would like to to try a set out Guitar
